Sir George Treby

1643 - 1701

George Treby, born of Plympton parents, was a member of Parliament for the borough in 1676. He became Lord lieutenant of London, and, after some years as a High Court Judge, was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England. He was married four times, and with the money brought to him on his last marriage bought land to the east of George Lane (then known as Manually or Madalyn Street) in Plympton, Devonshire, to have a large House built. This house was known as Plympton House, now a nursing home run by the sisters of St Peters Convent.

Sir George died before the house was complete in January 1701 at his home in Kensington, London.
