MARY ELIZABETH PHILLIPS WOOD
(John's daugher, married Cabble Wood of Amhurst, VA)
Mary Elizabeth Phillips was the daughter of John Phillips and Mary Stockton.
Born January 5, 1800 in Overton County, TN, she married Cabble Wood and moved
to Amherst County, VA. While I do not have her descendants, I can give this
information:
A clerk at the General Services Administration on form 6774A (Apr 1968, number
80160) writes, "The daughter applied for land in 1828, at Amherst County,
Virginia. The soldier was dead but no death date is shown." She/he then
included photostats of the Land Grants and Warrants for John Phillips for
service in the Virginia Continental Line and affidavits as follows:

Amherst County
Cabble Wood who intermarried with Elizabeth Phillips daughter and only Heir
at Law of John Philips do upon oath testify & declare that John Philips did Enlist
in the year 1778 for the term of during the war and served in the Virginia
Number Seven under the command of colonel Haws of the Virginia line and that
he continued in the Servis aforesaid until the close of the war: I further declare
that I have never received? a warrant from the bounty land promised to the
said John Philips on the part of the United States nor do I believe he ever
haved? it or transferred this claim to it in any manner whatsoever---
therefore know all men by these presents that I Cobble Wood afore said do
constitute and appoint Lunay Jordan? of Bedford County to be my true
and lawful attorny for me & in my name to demand and receive? from the
secretary of war of the united states awarrant for the bounty of land due to
me as aforesaid & my said attorny is hereby fully authorized & impowered to
constitute & appoint one or many substitutes or-attornys under him for the
special perposes above.

The Court in Bedford County, VA on the 24th day of November 1828 affirmed
the proof given that Elizabeth Wood formerly Elizabeth Phillips was the
only heir at law for John Phillips, who was a soldier in the Seventh Regiment
of the Virginia line on Continental Establishment. The document was certified
by Gustavus A. Wingfield, Deputy Clerk of Bedford County, VA.
