Beatification of
Mother Theodore
Venerable Mother Theodore Guerin, who founded
the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods,
Ind., in 1840, will receive the title "Blessed" during a beatification
ceremony Oct. 25, 1998, in Rome. Beatification is a proclamation by the
Roman Catholic Church that Mother Theodore is a holy and virtuous woman,
worthy of honor and
emulation.
"Mother Theodore is a woman for our time," said
Sister Diane Ris, general superior of the Sisters of Providence Congregation.
"Mother Theodore's faith, hope and love are models for all of us.
Mother Theodore had a deep, deep faith that never faltered or wavered.
She
derived strength from her faith in God. She knew
that God was always with her and always would be with her in all
circumstances and, especially, in times of trial. She knew God always
was present."
Mother Theodore (Anne-Thérèse) Guerin
was born in France in 1798 and entered the Sisters of Providence
in Ruillé-sur-Loir, France, in 1823. In 1840, in response to a
request from the bishop of Vincennes, Ind., Mother Theodore and five sister
companions journeyed to the United States to establish a motherhouse
and a school for girls in the wilderness of west-central Indiana.
The sisters arrived at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods the evening of Oct.
22, 1840, and within a year opened their first academy. Mother Theodore
died May 14, 1856. She is buried at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
The process for the beatification and canonization
of Mother Theodore began in 1909, when Bishop Francis Silas Chatard,
bishop of Indianapolis, granted permission for the opening of the
Informative Process of the Cause for Mother Theodore. The process took
place in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis as the
first required step of the Cause and involved a thorough study of
Mother Theodore's life, work and writings.
In 1956, Pope Pius XII approved and signed the
petition to continue the Cause of Mother Theodore. In 1992, cardinals
and bishops declared that Mother Theodore had practiced the theological
and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree. Pope John Paul II ordered
a decree about her heroic virtues and gave her the title "Venerable."
Proof of one miracle is required for beatification,
the next to the last step in the canonization process. Proof of a
second miracle is required for sainthood.
The healing of Sister of Providence Mary Theodosia
Mug through the intercession of Mother Theodore was unanimously approved
as a miracle by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints medical
consultants Nov. 20, 1996, by theologians March 25, 1997, and by
cardinals June 3, 1997. The recommendation for the beatification of Mother
Theodore then was presented to Pope John Paul II who read the proclamation
July 7, 1997.
The decree issued by the Congregation for the
Causes of Saints said, in part, that Mother Theodore "lived for the
good of the sisters and other persons" and that she was "renowned
for her sanctity."
Sister Mary Theodosia, an educator and writer,
suffered from neuritis and cancer. On the evening of Oct. 30, 1908,
Sister Mary Theodosia prayed at Mother Theodore's tomb. When
she awoke the following morning, she was cured of the illnesses.
In the decree, Pope John Paul II declared: "Know
that the miracle done by God through the intercession of the Venerable
Servant of God Theodore Guerin ... is evident with regard to the
sudden, complete and stable recovery of Sister Mary Theodosia Mug ... "
The beatification ceremony for Mother Theodore will be conducted Sunday
morning,
Oct. 25, at the Vatican. Sisters of Providence,
Companions and friends, in Rome and at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, also
will observe the event during a prayer vigil Saturday evening, Oct.
24, and a Mass of Thanksgiving Monday morning, Oct. 26
Details about the ceremonies and information about
pilgrimages to Rome will be announced during the next few weeks.
Sisters of Providence currently minister in 24 states, the District
of Columbia, Taiwan and the West Indies.

WEB Site Changes
Nativity's web site was changed to a Geocities
Plus site which means no more annoying advertisements when the site is
accessed. Also this increases the amount of web space from 3mb to
25mb (mb = 1,000,000 bytes of information or keystrokes). I have
received several favorable comments about Nativity's site and would like
to thank those who have taken the time to offer your suggestions and insight.
This site is currently only taking up 500k
( k=1,000 bytes of information or keystrokes) of space so we now have 20.5mb
to use.
Again if you have any comments or suggestions
please feel free to E-mail them to me at cwstrot@netnitco.net or you may
E-mail them from the home page of this site.
Parish Humor
Once a man confessed a very peculiar sin to a priest
and they both agreed that the matter required further counseling.
"Go home and recite the rosary," the priest said,
"skip a day, recite another one, skip a day, recite another one, then come
see me."
When the appointed time came , the penitent's
wife showed up. " Where's your husband?" the priest asked.
"He's dead, "she replied, "and you killed him." The priest was taken
aback. "How can reciting the Rosary possibly kill anyone?" he asked.
"Oh it wasn't the Rosary that killed him," she
explained. "It was all the shipping."
