GB Stamps & Postal History of the Former Soviet Union - from Norvic Philatelics

Welcome to Norvic Philatelics.

You have arrived at our Yahoo-Geocities site, which is mostly devoted to the stamps and recent postal history of the countries of the Former Soviet Union.

For up-to-date news about new stamps of Great Britain, please visit our main GB news site. There you can find information on recent and forthcoming stamps and special postmarks (mostly pictorial and of interest to thematic/topical collectors), together with some older items for sale.

We also have an online shop selling worldwide stamps, first day covers, postal history, maximum cards, and picture postcards - click here.

Philately and postal history of the Former Soviet Union

These pages provide information about modern postal history in the countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). This is a vast and under-researched area, and the pages will be expanded only slowly as my collection is sorted and researched, so please be patient if everything seems to be quiet for too long. The emphasis will be on text information and images of stamps, etc, so you won't see a lot of fancy graphics! If you would like me to tell you when new pages are added, please e-mail me, and I will notify you.

This was written in early 2002 and even then it seemed much more than ten years since the break-up of the Soviet Union into 15 separate self-governing republics. For anybody interested in postal history, these countries were making it then!

Following a general introduction I intend to provide detailed information on the modern philatelic history of the 15 countries. There are some pages showing their stamps, and the different ways they showed the postage paid on letters. Unfortunately I haven't had the time, since 2002, to do any more research into the thousands of covers that I have from Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Russia and Georgia etc, but I am always hopeful that I will be able to allocate some time to this again soon!

At present only BELARUS is represented in detail. There are a number of pages with illustrations of stamps, and covers with emergency surcharges and other markings.

LINKS

I have tried to keep any links on these pages relevant to their content. This means that links are fewer, and will take up less of your time.

One of the best sites for links to postal administrations and other philatelic sites, question & answer area, and stamp insurance is Wardrop's Philately Online
A good place to buy postal history online is Roy & Debbie Lingen's Postal History site including the $2-$5 Cover Box and Discount Cover Box.
For foreign currency conversions, and a daily mailing service go to Xenon Labs Currency List service.

Links relevant to the FSU can be found on the individual country pages and in the Introduction.

If you have any questions, or comment, please e-mail: Norvic Philatelics
