McHaffie Family

The origin of the name is (Gaelic) MacDhubhshith which means (dark of peace). Crest Badge: A demi-lion rampant, proper. Motto: Pro rege ( For the King). The island of Colonsay is the ancient home of the Macduffies or Macphees, a branch of the great Clan Alpine. Not much is known of the early history of the clan, but in 1463 a Donald Macduffie witnessed a charter at Dingwall. The clan was prominent in the history of the Western Highlands. Macfie of Colonsay was one of the principal chiefs who met Bishop Knox and signed the famous"Statutes of Iona" in 1609. Rebellion later disposessed the Macfies from Colonsay and some of the clan followed the MacDonalds, others settled in Cameron country in Lochaber, In Galloway the name took the form of Macguffie and Machaffie.

The farthest back I've been able to go with the McHaffie's is a Robert McHaffie born in 1820 and died June 15 1881. He was an engineer on board a ship plying between Liverpool , England and Stranraer, Scotland. He died suddenly at sea(probably a heart attack) at the age of 61. He is buried in Sheuchan Cemetary in Stranraer, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He married a girl Ann Rankin , who died June 20,1898. They were married January 30,1844 in Inch Parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland. As far as I figure they had 6 sons.
