Andrew Jackson Gross moved with his parents to Mahoning County, Ohio (until 1846, Mahonoing County was a prat of Trumbull County, OH) Nothing has been found to tell us of his childhood or the names of his parents. However, both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. We know nothing of Margaret Starrett's life except that her parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Shortly after their marriage, they moved Hardin Co. Ohio.

The family moved to Poweshiek County, Iowa in 1863 where Andrew and Margaret spent the rest of their lives. Mr. Gross was a farmer by occupation and made his home on a farm about four miles northwest of Deep River, Iowa in Poweshiek County. It was here that he died. He was buried in the Montezuma Cemetery. Margaret was buried in the same cemetery.
