THE DETAILS!

We want to keep this short.  The long and short of it is that Leah was induced on Monday and by the grace of her doctor, was allowed to be given Petocin Monday afternoon instead of Tuesday.   They gave the Petocin at around 5:30 and at around 5:45 Jon went home to get some dinner and check on the kids.  Of course, when Jon returned to the hospital at 7:15 things had moved along quite a bit.  The contractions had greatly intensified and were coming every minute.  Leah requested an epidural and they were looking for the anesthesiologist.  Jon took over from the nurse in helping Leah breathe through the contractions.  After about 15 minutes, Jon felt very nauseous and dizzy, started walking towards the bathroom and next thing he remembers, he's sitting on the floor!    He only passed out for a few seconds, crawled into the bathroom took some deep breaths and went back to help Leah.  Apparently the deep breathing caused him to hyperventilate!

The anesthesiologist arrived at around 7:30 and started to get the epidural going.  The nurse checked Leah at around 7:45 and she was 5 centimeters dilated.  The anesthesiologist was done a little after 8:00 and Leah told the nurse she felt something coming.  The nurse, doubting this after checking her only 20 minutes ago told her to keep on taking deep breaths.  She did check her and sure enough, the head was coming out!  Very calmly the nurse pushed the call button and said she needed a doctor here right away.   We asked the nurse if she had ever delivered a baby before and she replied "Yes, but I don't want to do it again!"  In the meantime another nurse in the room checked Leah and said "Let's get this baby out - it looks like it will be easy".  Leah relaxed a minute, pushed twice and out came the baby!  No doctors!   It was pretty unbelievable.  She went from 5 centimeters to delivering in about 45 minutes.  The on-call OB showed up about 5 minutes later and our doctor arrived 15 minutes later - quite stunned.  Jon cut the umbilical cord.
