Oreo (aaCCEEGGPPSpsp) and Sunkist (aaCCeeGGpp)

I have two aquairums with gerbils. In one aquarium [ten gallon] lives Sunkist (RED FOX female) and Oreo (Black pied male)with some babies. They have had three litters of gerbils born on 8/2/97,10/30/97,and 12/2/97.All the babies have either been black or black pied/ spotted.Their genes are aaCCEeGGPp or aaCCEeGGPpSpsp. Visit the Gerbil Calculator. This website gives you all the colors and the genetic codes possible for gerbil offspring. After, you type in the parents genes.

You may also use my Gene chart.

In my other aquarium [twenty gallon long] I have Creamy (REH pied male, AaCCeeGGppSpsp.) and Nutty (Nutmeg pied male, aaCCeeGGPpSpsp.).Creamy and Nutty are brothers born on 10/22/97.Their mother,Honey pied (DEH pied female) was Sunkist sister.Their father was a Nutmeg .Honey pied,Nutmeg and siblings now live in South Dakota.

Here is their Family tree. They are under the last column.Elizabeth of the Dani clan helped me with this tree.

My Gerbils eat wild bird seed mixed with the following:unsweetened dry breakfast cereal, rice, peas, crumbled crackers and dry dog kibble.Occasionally, bread, pasta, peanuts, walnuts and vegetables are given as treats.

For bedding,I use pine shavings with paper towels, tissues, cardboard, and white paper [discared mail, paper bags, etc.]

Creamy,Nutty and Keebler

Keebler a black pied female from Oreos first litter used to live with Creamy and Nutty but she didn't like Creamy. As a result, Creamy was attacked on 12/23/97 and was bitten on his back feet, tail and at the base of his tail. He is now drinking water with Ornacycline from Mardel Laboratories, a broad-spectrum,friut flavored bird antibiotic to prevent infection because his foot was swollen.

12/27/97 Creamy is feeling better. He is able to run on his wheel, dig, chew on cardboard, and eat.

12/31/97 The swelling went down but now there is a small lump above the pinky on his right hind foot. His pinky is also darker than the other toes.

12/29/97 Oreo was chasing the males from his litter of 10/30/97, so I had to separate them.I didn't want what happened to Creamy to happen again. Now Sunkist and Oreo are in their 10 gallon Aquarium and Creamy and Nutty are in the twenty gallon long with nine of their cousins.(See who's who on next page.)They seem to be getting along. They play together and sleep together in a big pile.Yesterday,I gave them Chinchilla dust to bathe in. I put the dust in a small box and they all jumped in and rolled around in it.They loved it.

1/4/98 Creamy's bite marks have all healed. The lump on his foot has gone down. Now the pinky is shriveled.Creamy and Nutty are still with their cousins and are getting along.Their names are:Little Oreo,Nabisco,Arrow,Cookie,Inky,Blackie,Pierre and Pookie. Two of my black gerbils were named after other black gerbils on the internet.

Sunkist is getting big.She is very plump and may be having another litter soon.

1/5/98 Creamy now has 4 toes on his foot.

I made a climbing toy with paper towel/wrapping paper tubes and cardboard.Creamy,Nutty, and the cousins enjoyed playing with this toy by going though the tubes and climbing on it.Soon, this will become bedding.See below.

Today Oreo and Sunkist were given Kix cereal for a treat.Oreo grabbed one and ran to a corner,he also spun around a few times before eating.

1/10/98 Sunkist and Oreo had 7 babies today.

1/15/98 There are 5 pied/spotted and 2 black.Every litter has had 2 black babies. One of the babies has a tail that curls under at the tip.

Here are some ideas of what you can make or use for your Gerbils.

WHEN MAKING ITEMS CHECK FOR SAFETY .

Don't use toys with openings smaller than 1 1/2 inches. The Little Rascals, has a page on Toy Safety here.

Visit Twin Squeaks "Archived Gerbil Tips" web page. They also have gerbil things you can make and helpful tips regarding the care of gerbils.Their split tank design is Great!

Their water bottle holder is made from a can.To make the holder drill a small hole on the bottom of the can then insert the spout through the hole.At the top of the can make a tiny hole and with a pliers crimp a 5 inch piece of wire coat hanger to it and hook over the side of the aquarium. Also, put a rubber band on the top of the bottle, to hold it against the wire hook. This holder will prevent your gerbils from chewing on the water bottle.

A hard plastic jar can also be used to protect the water bottle.

Kecia from the American Gerbil Society wrote -- Hi Gary ! You know what kind of Bottles I found that work AWESOME for chewers....I save Soy Sauce Bottles, Hot Sauce Bottles even a Bottle that had Pepper Corns in it for grinding, these Bottles are Glass so they canīt ever be chewed!!...I boil the Bottle to get the residue out of it whatever that may be, I use all Food item Bottles though, also the Boiling gets off the Label too, they last forever as long as I donīt drop one! Also a good way to get "replacement " Bottles without paying full price for them is to check out the Cosmetic section in a Big Store like a Walmart or something....in the section where they have "Travel Containers" you can often find bottles that WILL fit our 4 & 8oz. Nozzles, I have gotten these for like 50 cents a piece, I do have to buy a package for $1.50, but 3 for that is a good price still!! Have a great day! Kecia / FurryFlowers

A can toy can be made by glueing three different size cans together with a dab of silacone. Two on the bottom and one on the top.The gerbils will go through the cans,climb/jump on top or dig under it.

An empty jar can be placed in the aquarium, for gerbils who like to dig in corners.

Cages covers can be made from 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch Hardware cloth or refrigerator wire shelves if the spacing is close together.

If you have a metal exercise wheel you can make it easier for the gerbils to run on, by wrapping a strip of paper around the outside of the wheel and glueing/taping it together, where it overlaps. My gerbils sometimes chew on this paper. When they do I replace it. With the paper on the wheel they can run faster.

Wheels can be made from large round cans like the ones butter cookies come in.Using a metal rod ,silacone it across the middle top of the open can. Then drill a tiny hole in the center of the rod and the center of the bottom of the can.Next insert the wire hanger through a large bead, the rod and the bottom of the can.Bend the hanger at 90° to hang from the cover or from the side. The bead will create a space between the rod and the hanger preventing injuries. If the can is wide enough you may use a 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch stick instead of the metal rod.

Cardboard tubes from paper towels, bathroom tissues and the really thick ones from carpets are excellent for chewing on.These can also be glued together with pieces of cardboard using nontoxic childrens glue in different ways, creating tunnels, hiding spots and climbing structures.

Scrap pieces of clean wood can also be used in the same way.

Water bottles can be made from empty cologne bottles if they are all glass and have a vacuume.First make sure they are rinsed out very well and then taste the water to make sure there is no trace of cologne in the bottle. A holder for this bottle can be made using a wire coat hanger.

Tuna fish/cat food cans,ceramic/glass bowls, mugs,or candy dishes can be used for food dishes.

Ceramic flowerpots, childrens sorting cubes, cardboard shoe boxes,Coffee/large juice cans,Lego building blocks or a slanted board can be used for their home/nest box.

Cage covers can be locked on by drilling two holes at the top of the aquairium where the ledge is. Make the hole in the center of each ledge and insert two bolts and nuts.Next, place the cover over the two bolts and secure with washers and a nut or wing nut.

Tomato paste/sauce cans can be attached to Habitrail or S.A.M. tubes if you need a small connection. These cans can also be used to protect the tubes from getting chewed when leading into tanks as connectors to different tanks.

Instinct causes gerbils to cover their food.I let mine cover theirs. If you want to prevent your gerbils from covering their foodbowls with shavings, you can raise it off the bedding by putting it on top of their house or by using a coat hanger. The coat hanger is wrapped around the lip of the bowl or attached to a tiny hole drilled at the top of the bowl.Next, the hanger is hooked over the top of the aquarium and placed into the corner 5 inches above the shavings. When the gerbils want to eat they will jump up.

Velcro can be used to attach waterbottles, foodbowls or habitrail tubes to the sides of the aquarium. If you put velcro on the top edge of the aquarium and the bottom of the cover,It will hold the cover in place.
