John and Mary moved from Baltimore to Tennessee in 1791. John was one of the first magistrates appointed for Washington County, TN by Governor Sevier in 1796.

In the name of God Amen.

I John Norwood of Blount County in the State of Tennessee being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory (for which I thank God) and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly substance. Substance as it hath pleased God to bless me with. I give and bequeath the same in the manner following. That is to say, 1st I desire that all my personal property be immediately sold after my decease except so much as may be herein after named as the dowry of my Widow. And out of the monies _______ therefrom all my last debts and funeral expenses be paid. And the remainder of said monies if any, be appropriated to payment of installments upon my land and if my decease should take place between the first day of May and the first day of January that one third of the crops and one third of the pork if fattened be sold. 2nd I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Ruth (Kilpatrick) Norwood the plantation on which I now live during her natural life or widowhood. I also give and bequeath to her my bed and bedding, Cupboard and furniture, all the household and the kitchen furniture which she brought with her upon our marriage or that she has made since. All my farming utensils also; All the cattle and increase that she brought with her. Also all my sheep and half my hogs. John's obituary appeared in the September 26, 1826 edition of the "Knoxville Enquirer" and read as follows:

Departed this life on 8/30 (1826) after illness of several months, John Norwood Esq. in the 67 year of his age. Formerly resident of Washington County, for many years now of Blount County, where he ended his pilgrimage. Was an acceptable member of the Methodist Church for 49 years; die strong and joyful confidence in hope of an immortal life. Was a soldier of the Revolutionary War.

Norwood Inn

The Norwood Inn was built in 1820, styled in a type of architecture popular in the early 1800's, a large two story main part and an ell of one story flanked by porches. It was a pretentious building in its day, containing in the original structure eight rooms.

The Inn was located on the Niles Ferry Road (old) then called the Federal Road and was about 14 miles from Maryville, 14 from Madisonville and 14 from Loudon. Many stages passed the Inn, stopping for a change of horses, or overnight rest depending upon the time of day and the stage coach schedule. The Inn was built by John Norwood, who had been an Innkeeper in Maryville, following his service as a soldier of the Revolutionary War.

The original Inn had two identical entrances and ten windows on the front elevation, each window contained 15 panes. The two doors led to large rooms which had huge fireplaces and high mantles.

An interesting architectural fact is that the wall between the rooms was made of brick and then plastered while the outside walls of the house were constructed

of hand hewn weather-board. The two main rooms, heated by huge fireplaces had between them a small tap room for the weary traveller to have his night cap or hot rum, or stronger drink.

Back of the reception rooms was an enormous dining room, 30 feet in length. To the right of this was another dining room with an open fireplace and built in cupboards on either side. Back of these dining rooms was an attached kitchen. The 30-foot room was referred to as the summer dining room because it did not have a fireplace and was only used in cold weather if the Inn had an 'overflow' crowd.

There are faded old records in Blount County's Courthouse which showed

that John Norwood purchased in 1819, the furniture for this Inn. He bought 14 beds, ten bureaus (chest of drawers) and ten tables, according to court records. Of course, much other furniture was added and much of it still remains in the families of descendents of the Norwoods.

In 1826, John Norwood died and his son John Norwood the third, bought

the interests of the other heirs and operated the Inn until his death in 1840. At this time, John's brother Wesley, bought the Inn and established himself and his family as owners and keepers of the Norwood Inn. He bought more land and more slaves. The original Inn was now too small for the amount of business it had and so Wesley Norwood added three more large rooms. These were a continuation of the front and in line with the original rooms. These added rooms each had an outside entrance, and the front of the Inn now had five front doors.

The Inn prospered until the coming of the War Between the States. War put an end to travel, raiders and bushwhackers took their toll from the massive operation of the Inn and the surrounding acreage. After the war, the railroads put an end to the need of Inns along the routes of Stage Coach travel.

The site is now marked on the New Niles Ferry Highway by a Tennessee

Nelson WRIGHT of Blount County, Tenn. 1824. Robert McTEER sold land 114 acres in Blount to William SHERRILL 1821. SHERRILL was engaged in trading and driving horses. James and Ignatious WILSON, brothers, were merchants in Blount County 1821. John WILKINSON was a lawyer there. A short time afterwards. William SHERRILL left the county with a drove of horses for North Carolina and had never returned. Ignatious WILSON died in Jun 1823 leaving as heirs, three minor children, James, Mary and Richard I. WILSON.

A trust deed made by William SHERRILL and Robert McTEER to the WILSONS was witnessed by Tarnes CONNOR, Uriah SHERRILL, John NORWOOD and Zekiah BARNARD, dated 30 Jan 1821. James HENRY and Jesse KERR were also mentioned. Thomas WILSON was witness to William SHERRILL'S note. 1825, Nelson WRIGHT was said to have gone to Georgetown in South Carolina, where William SHERRILL resided. In 1827 the sherriff of Monroe County

Crouch Surname History:

The name Couch or Crouch, history says, comes from the Cross or Crucifix, which stood by the wayside: a family living near one of the crosses was called "Man by the Cross" or Crouch. The monks or friars had their cloaks embroidered with many crosses, "Crouchs" they called it: an old will left by one of the Couch family who first came to America had a [mystic, rustic] cross engraved on it, proving the name.

Still haven't found anything on a marriage location on a Sarah Crouch marriage to John. I did find a John Norwood married a Mary ? on June 21, 1823.

I have always thought she was a daughter or main line relative of the Crouch family in Washington Co, TN where John (the father) was a magistrate. It would have been a correct timeframe for this location to be the place of the marriage but keep being told that the Marys in this timeframe married other persons by Crouch researchers?

Sarah may always be a mystery unless someone comes up with a heretofore unknown Norwood or Crouch bible record.

Moved to Washington Co, TN in 1791.

George and Mary moved to Wayne Co, IN where the town of Milton now stands, in 1819, and on March 22, 1822 moved to Indianapolis, then consisting of a few log cabins.

George Norwood was by trade a wagon maker, his first shop being located in West Maryland Street and the next one on the S. E. corner of the State House Square. He had leased these eight acres for pasture and garden and his cabin was about where the south wing of the State House now stands. When this ground was needed for the new State House, he gave up his lease for "$300.00, buying the ground where the Wm. H. Block Store now stands for $300.00 and a fip". He later bought the N.E. corner of Illinois and Washington Streets for $300.00 and erected his wagon shop there. He was elected councilman several times, in 1846 City Treasurer and in 1850 he retired from active life, enjoying excellent health til a period just previous to his death which occurred at the home of his grandson, John L. Norwood, N.E. corner Broadway and Vine St. on March 8, 1880. He was a member of the first Board of Trustees of Meridian Street Church and his wife was one of the charter members of that church. She died in her home on N. Illinois Street, Indianapolis, February 23, 1877, and was buried at Crown Hill. There were ten children.

GEORGE NORWOOD, one of the oldest citizens of Indianapolis, was born Jan. 21, 1789, in the city of Baltimore, and in 1793 removed to Washington County, East Tenn. In 1819 he became a resident of Wayne County, Ind., and on the 22d of March, 1822, Indianapolis, which at that early day embraced but a few straggling cabins, became his home. Mr. Norwood was by trade a wagon-marker, and for a number of years conducted his business on the present site of the office occupied by his grandson, Frank Bird. He some years previous to his death divided his considerable estate between his children, retaining for himself only a house and lot on Illinois Street. He was married in 1812 to Miss Mary Ann Rooker, who died Feb. 28, 1877, in her eighty-fourth year, having enjoyed sixty-five years of married life. Their surviving children are Washington, Norwood, Ana Maria (Mrs. Abram Bird), and E. F. Norwood. Mr. Norwood was in his religious predilections a Methodist, and the first trustee of the first Methodist Episcopal Church of Indianapolis. He on successive occasion filled the office of Councilman, and in 1846 was elected city treasurer. He enjoyed a reputation for strict integrity and scrupulous honesty, and was firm in his convictions, especially in discussions involving a question of right and wrong. Having acquired a competency, Mr. Norwood, retired from business in 1850, and during the remainder of his life enjoyed excellent health until a short period before his death, which occurred March 8, 1880, in his ninety -second year.

Goodspeed’s History of Tennessee (1887)

METHODIST:

In 1815 John HENNINGER was assigned to the Knoxville Circuit. He was succeeded by Nicholas NORWOOD in 1816, Josiah B. DAUGHTRY in 1817, and George ATKIN in 1818. The next year Knoxville was made a station and Knox Circuit, to which Robert HOOPER was assigned, was formed. Meanwhile several new churches had been organized in Knox County.

Nicholas and Mary lived in Knox County eight miles north of Knoxville, TN, until they moved to Indiana in 1834. They settled on a farm seven miles south of Indianalis, Nicholas farming during the week and preaching on Sunday. He died at thei rhome on S. Illinois Street about three squares south of where the Union Station now stands. George Norwood had given George Hern Norwood a lot there and his parents had built a home on it. Rachel Meek Norwood had been ill for some time and was taken to the home of her daughter, Mary Featherstone, on Massachussetts Avenue, where she died. Both died before 1853, but the exact dates are unknown and both were buried in the old ;part of Round Top Cemetery near Southport, IN, where the lot is surrounded by an iron railing. There were nine children.

According to Goodspeed's History of White Co, TN, the Sperry family was in this area from an early date.

Probably the first mill in the county was the waterpower corn-mill erected on Caney Fork River, in the Thirteenth District, by Wm. Scarborough, in about 1810 or 1812. Wm. Glenn erected a similar mill on the Calf Killer in about 1815, and Thomas Simpson one on the same stream four miles below Sparta, at about the same time. From that date up to about 1820, mills were erected by Samuel Denton, six miles from Sparta, on the Calf Killer, Thomas Sperry and Jacob A. Lane on Town Creek, Wm. Basson on Caney Fork, Clark Swindler, Sr., on Cedar

Creek, T. B. Rice and J.W. Taylor, on the Calf Killer, all of which were corn-mills, and were operated by water power.

First District: C. L Sperry's corn-mill; Pearson & Co.'s steam saw-mill; Williams & Co.'s steam planing and grist-mill; S. D. Wallace's steam saw and planing-mill and O.F. Young's saw, corn and wheat-mills, on Calf Killer; M.J. Clark's, Matthias Anderson's, and A. L. Potts' flour, corn and sawmills on Town Creek.

The first mercantile establishment in Sparta was opened in 1809 by Keys & Clemmon. Other early merchants and tradesmen, from that time up to about 1820, were Wm. Glenn, Jesse Lincoln (cousin to President Lincoln), Fletcher & Lumpton, Jubal Hancock, T. B. Rice, and Simpson & Allen; W. C. Brittan operated a large hattery, working from six to eight hands; Thomas Sperry and Wm. Musgrove and Nathan Starkley were tailors; Wm. Mitchell, Nat Davis and Wm. Glenn were the tavern-keepers; Joseph Copher and Wm. Burton were the blacksmiths, and Wm. Anderson operated an extensive tanyard, the first sunk in the town or county.

35 JAMES ASBURY ALSTON, born in Elbert County, Ga., in 1818 and

died in Monroe County, 1856; was in Creek war in Captain

Flewellyn's company and received injuries from which he

afterwards died. The extract from his obituary will serve to

illustrate his character. He married in 1840, REBECCA JANE,

dau. of Caleb and Jane (Manson) Norwood, who bore him 5

children and is still living.

My mother was Louisa RUTHERFORD Norwood born in the Hiwassee Purchase in Tennessee, a Cherokee. My father was Thomas R. Norwood, a Methodist Preacher, born and raised near the Arkansas and Oklahoma line. I was born July 2, 1860, in Benton County, Arkansas, two miles from the old Cherokee Line Road. My mother died when I was five days old and I was the oldest of my father's children as he afterward married again. Much of my early days were spent with my grandparents, the Norwoods.

Thomas Norwood and his wife, Salinda, my grandparents, bought four hundred acres when they came here. During the days of Fort Wayne, my grandfather peddled hogs to that place, which was seven or eight miles from their home and my grandmother made "fried peach pies" which she sold at the Fort and earned enough from their sale to buy her an Indian pony.

My uncles, the Norwoods, were in the Claremon Mound Battle with the Osages. During the battle the Cherokees bottled up some Osages and many, many years later when they were found it was called a prehistoric find. Once the Cherokee law was if you were caught harboring or feeding Tom Starr, the punishment was hanging. One day he came to my aunt's house and asked her for something to eat. She gave him what she had, including corn bread and meat and he sat down on the porch to eat it and when she asked if he was not afraid, he said he would watch out. While he was sitting there eating a deer came up the lane from the woods and passed the house and he got up and said that he must be going and soon some men came from the same way looking for him. At night, he would sleep by a pond and if the frogs stopped croaking, he would get up and move. When he came to the woods, he would enter if the birds were singing but

if they were not he would not enter as they would stop their singing just as the frogs stopped croaking at the approach of strangers. The old Cherokees were real spiritualists and much of their lore was associated with the birds, animals,

etc.

At the opening of the Civil War, my father joined the Union Army and was in the Battle of Fayetteville where the Union Forces won.

Grandmother Norwood's house was burned during the War and after the War we moved back to Norwood Prairie. Uncle Ned ENGLAND had two little one-room log houses left on his place over in Washington County. My father began to hew

the pine logs for another home and soon we had a double log house. Grandmother leased her place for five years for the tenant to build her a house on it and when I was five years old, here I stated to school. I walked four miles. All of the rest of the families were Rebels, I was the only Federal and the children called me the "Little Lousy Federal". The teacher took me one day and looked me over and then she told the rest of them that I was a clean little girl. We only had three months of school in my younger days. My next school was in a little log building at the end of the prairie.

Life for us and for those around us was hard in those days, so much property had been destroyed. People were living in caves and any other makeshifts that they could find. Their stock was gone and in most cases they did not even have

any furniture except what the men could make. In the beginning the Cherokees had made homes here in a new country without anything and so most of them began again but some of the fields did not have to be recleared and a few buildings were standing so as the years passed, they managed to add to what they already had, to gather together some stock, put in a little more ground each year and to raise a little more each year while the women folks, from the flax

that they raised and from the wool of the sheep, began to make their thread and to spin the cloth for clothes for the different members of the family, weave blankets and cloth for the other bed-coverings, etc. Why, I was baptized in a

linsey dress, the cloth for which I helped to weave.

The Christian Advocate was the only newspaper that we had in the house. My father wrote an article for it. After I was married to Charlie RIDER, August 24, 1884, we went to live at the Hills. My husband was an Indian Police as

was John BARBEE living here and they often worked together. Frequently, I was alone but I could ride and was a good shot and always kept my gun at the house.

Through my husband's work, I have had a wide knowledge of the different outlaws and bad men of those days. Our home at the Hills was eight miles northwest of Pryor. We were living here when the Daltons held up a train at Adair. There were only two trains a day each way on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad then. The marshals and police got word of the intended holdup which was to be staged that night as the train neared Adair.

Dr. GOFF had just come to that place from Saint Louis and he and another doctor had been out in the country that day but had returned and were sitting on the porch of the little hotel when they were told by the officers of the intended

holdup. Dr. Goff said that he had always wanted to see a holdup, so he and his friend continued to sit in the shade on the porch. It was a bright moon-lit night, the officers had boarded the train farther down the track and as the train neared

Adair the gang divided and part stepped on the west side of the track and the balance on the east.

The officers killed one of the gang and drove the others off and as they left they spied the white shirts of the two doctors on the porch and as the Daltons passed they fired below the white shirts, Dr. Goff was shot in the legs and the other doctor was shot in the heel. Realizing that they would have to come into the open for help, Dr. Goff said, "We will have to crawl to the train. I've got forty dollars in my pocket and I'll put it under the porch". They put the wounded doctors on the train and brought them to Vinita and there they cut off one of Doctor Goff's legs and he died.

Another time, my husband, in company with John Barbee, came up with ADAMS, a bootlegger and bad-man. Adams was riding a good horse and leading one on which was his pack containing five gallons of whiskey, one gallon of wine, his bed and camp outfit and a new saddle.

Adams gun jammed, so Charlie got the drop on him and took him prisoner. My husband's girth broke and he handed his gun to Barbee and told him to guard Adams while he fixed it. Adams, watching his chance, jumped on the other man,

knocked him down and took his gun and then he said to him, "You are going to that timber, I am going to ride there with a gun on you". Adams got away but they had his pack-horse.

Charlie brought the things home and received a telegram to report at Muskogee to help settle some trouble with the coal miners living below there. This left me at home alone with my son, Clint, who was ten years old. I had the man's gun, a

Winchester, and my son's target when a neighbor rode up and told me that Adams had returned and had sent him to tell us that he wanted his things and that he was coming after them. He came shortly after that and first asked for his liquor saying, "I guess Rider has drunk that". I replied that the evidence, meaning the liquor, had been taken to Vinita. He saw his saddle hanging up in the house, entered and got it and went to the lot where the horse was and saddled the horse and during this time he never put the gun out of his hand; he saddled his horse with the gun still in his hand. Later, one day when Charlie was in Vinita, they told him that they had Adams in the Marshal's office wounded and when Charlie went in and he saw him, Adams said, "There is the only man that ever got the drop on me".

You know how the name of "bootlegger" came into use, don't you? The Indian country has always been supposed to have prohibition and in the early days when there were distilleries along the state line, especially at Southwest City,

Missouri, and Galena, Kansas, the men wore boots with high high tops and they would buy the whiskey, mostly in gallon lots, and then put it in pint bottles and ride around the country with these bottles in the tops of their boots and sell the liquor to the people, hence the name bootleggers.

I saw Jesse JAMES at Vinita once at a fair. There were two snow-white wagons that had brought in race horses and they were getting ready for the race when a neighbor, George CLARK, who was something of a bully came along and told

some men to get off the fence around the track. When he came to the man who was Jesse James, who had not moved, he said, "Get off", and started to push him off when he made no move. James took hold of him and as he went off the

fence, he took Clark with him over the fence outside. Clark doubled up his quirt to strike when others interfered and then Clark told James not to re-enter the race grounds. James quietly walked to the ticket window and, laying down the

money, asked for a ticket. The agent refused and then he saw a gun leveled at him and James said, "This means two tickets, I've a horse running in there and I'm going to see the race". He got his ticket and entered and Jim HALL who had

recognized Jesse James, went to Clark and told him to let those men alone.

We were young and jolly in those days and had lots of company. We never played cards at home but we did dance, play dominoes, etc., and often folks would come and stay all night with us. One night at our home, I saw my husband keep looking at the window behind me. As soon as I had a chance, I said to him, "What are you watching?" He replied that he saw Charlie KEYS, a white man and an outlaw, mashing his face against the window. The next morning my husband

found where someone had slept in a bed of shucks at the barn and later where a horse had been fed. Keys was caught and served his time and three years later my husband met him at Nowata and asked him if had not slept in his barn one

night, the night that he saw him at the window. He replied that he had and he had come there that night because he was hungry. Looking into the room he saw persons there who would have caused trouble if they had seen him so he thought perhaps Charlie would come out and he would ask him for something to eat but when he did not, he had spent the night at the barn and left very early the next morning.

In my girlhood days my father had a sawmill and two outlaws came to the neighborhood and worked for him until it was found out who they were. During this time one of the men had married Carrie WHITNEY, a girl in our neighborhood.

Later, the man was killed near Muskogee and left two good horses and some things and they sent Carrie word to come and get them. One of our late United States Marshals took her down in a buggy to get them. On the way down he asked her to drive while he lighted his pipe and then he turned to the girl and asked her if she cared if he kissed her. She dropped the lines and he said after that it was the worst working over that he ever got and from a woman when he was only in fun.

I saw much of the early life at my husband's side but the toughest place I ever saw was the Negro Payment at Hayden Store, twenty-five miles north of Chelsea in the Gooseneck Bend. Expecting to be there some time, we had taken a tent.

The limestone soil there around the limestone rocks was soft from the Spring rains and when we pitched our tent it was the worst place that I have seen. I had a big dog with me and we had our food packed in a barrel. Two neighbor's tents

were on one side of me and a medicine tent on the other. Charlie had taken a Negro that he had arrested for stealing a horse to Vinita and with the exception of the dog I was alone when one night a Negro rode up to the tent and opened the

tent and stepped in and asked, "Where is Charlie Rider?" Not thinking, I replied that he had gone to Vinita but that he would return soon. Stepping forward, he asked me what we had in the barrel? I backed before him as he entered until I

reached the place where a pistol lay which I picked up and, pointing it at him, told him to leave. Once I felt my finger give under the trigger. This is the nearest I ever came to shooting anyone.

At one of the cook tents they had a big iron range and one day the Negro cook said to me when there was a shooting going on, "Come and get behind this range, it's where I get out of the way". I stayed two weeks, then I packed up and

told Charlie that I was going home. I went and stayed through the payment.

Two squawmen, Fate and Ed BIRD, lived five or five and a half miles southwest of Chelsea at the Cochran Spring, which was a salty spring. It would have little bubbles of oil on the water and the cattle coming to drink would leave footprints in the ground around the spring and these footprints would fill with the black oil that escaped with the water from the spring. The old Indians had heard that this black oil would cure rheumatism so they would come there and take feathers and skim off the oil and then strip it off the feather into bottles. A man from Pennsylvania heard of the spring and drilled three hundred feet at the spring. They had a stationary engine, fed with logs and set a long way off and connected with belts, this engine ran the pump. They placed a big wooden hogshead under the spout of the pump and with a big auger they made a bunghole at the bottom of the hogshead. I walked on a long plank to the hogshead and I remember that I had on a mother hubbard that was four yards around the bottom and they told me to be careful not to get the black

substance on my dress. As I stood there by the side of the container I gathered up my skirt and held it. Soon down below was heard a gurgling noise and out came a pint of the black liquid into the barrel with the salt water. This would

occur about each four or five minutes. The oil is lighter than the salt water so it would rise to the top and then the bunghole would be opened and let the salt water run out at the bottom. Then they would dip the oil and carry it to other

containers placed nearby, this was either fifty-three or fifty-four years ago. Before this either in Flint or Going Snake district near the old Baptist Mission was an oil spring that I have heard my grandmother speak of.

My husband's uncles, the Marcus brothers, dug the salt wells south of Salina.

In those days neighbors did everything that they could for each other.

We had few doctors but our people had their own remedies for our ailments. When the people began to break up the country the people began to chill and my father told my husband that he had a log claim over in the hills where there

was a spring, the water of which would help cure chills, so we went over there for several months.

In those days if you marked a hog, usually a sow, she and her descendants belonged to you. We were out of meat when we reached there so Pa and Charlie went out and killed eight head of hogs and Pa killed a deer so we had plenty of meat and jerked venison.

Once in our home, a log cabin, I entertained an English Lord, Lord STOUDEN and his brother, Earl. I don't think these people had much money in England and they came to this country to make some. They brought a bunch of horses with

them. They stayed at the Jack KENDAL Ranch. Lord Stouden had a fine dog and guns and they would come to our house and Charlie would take the hack and we would go out and get a lot of prairie chickens. I would shoot with the men.

One day it rained and the men got wet. When we returned to our home, I thought that I would give him Charlie's Sunday shirt which was a white one with a white starched front and fastened in the back with three small buttons. The men

changed shirts and when they came out to the table Lord Stouden had Charlie's shirt on wrong side in front and had it buttoned down the front and when his attention was called to it he replied that it was warmer that way. It was at my log

cabin that he ate his first corn bread. Here he sat down to the table on which were vegetables, corn bread and fat meat.

At one time we had a coal mine on the farm where we were living. You rather lay on your shoulder and picked the coal out from under the ledge. I have tried this, too, and have picked out a tub-full at a time.

At one time we had five brothers, the HILTONS, from Texas working for us; all were good musicians and the evenings were happy ones with them playing after they returned to the house and got cleaned up and supper over. In remembrance of those days, I wrote a poem and when I learned that they were working at Bushyhead, later, I sent them a copy of it in a letter unsigned. One of the brothers got it and when he read it, he took it down to another brother and

read it to him and when he heard it, he, "That's from mother, she is homesick to see us". Soon after that one night at our home here in Afton after dark from a distance we heard the sound of music which kept coming closer. As I recognized

the music, I told Charlie that it was my boys and sure enough it was; they had come up by train and remained with us that night between trains.

I have heard some old folklore stories of being turned into animals. I don't know whether or not they are true but this I did see. When Heck BRUNER was drowned we lived in Pryor. The did not recover his body for three days and then they had to slide it on a blanket and into a coffin and when they brought the body home, it not being wise to take it into the house, it stood in the wagon in front of the house and while here some fluids from the body ran out and onto the ground. We were passing here later and our dog ran up to the place and after sniffing it, fell sideways to the ground. After that that dog would never pass that spot but would go to the other side of the street when passing there.

Charlie died here fifteen years ago; during his life we had always worked hard and since then I worked harder that ever to keep from remembering. After my days work I would sew and quilt fine quilts at night, etc. I can still go places and

spend much time visiting my old friends here but the strain on my eyes is telling on them for something is growing over them and I can now only see from the sides of them and am not able to either sew or read, which makes my days very

long. My only contact with the news today is the radio.

Rev. Jesse Mitchell

In early boyhood he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and afterward became an ordained minister in the Church in Polk Co., Mo., where he arrived in June 11, 1836. He was among the early settlers of the county, and died in 1854, having charge of the Stockton circuit at the time of his death. His father, Morris Mitchell, was also a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and came to Polk Co. in 1835, where he and his wife spent their declining years.

His wife, Providence (Norwood) Mitchell, was born in Tennessee in 1800, and died in Polk Co., Mo. about 1884, having been a devoted member of the Church for many years. Their union resulted in the birth of fourteen children.

MITCHELL, Rev., Jesse, son of Rev. Morris & Elizabeth Mitchell, was born 8 March 1798, and in 1843, he was licensed to preach and was employed as a local preacher to travel the Greenfield, Buffalo, & Springfield circuits. In 1851 he was appointed to the Fremont Circuit. He died at home on the 12th of August, 1854. Buried near his home in Polk Co., Mo.

Col. S.C. Norwood among the most prominent men now living in Bledsoe

county who have won an honorable name as a citizen of that county, none

is better deserving of representation in a volume of this nature than the

gentleman whose name introduces this sketch. Colonel Norwood was

born in the town of Maryville, Blount county, TN., February 27, 1822, a

son of John and Sarah (Crouch) Norwood. The father was of Irish

descent, born in Baltimore of a family of three brothers - one of whom

went to North Carolina, one to Alabama, and John to Tennessee. From

these have sprung large families in each state. Our subject's father, John

Norwood, was contemporaneous with Sam Houston, and was a warm

personal friend and accompanied him in his campaigns in the Indian wars,

and when Houston was badly wounded, he hauled him back to Maryville

where they both then lived.

Col. Norwood had no educational advantages in early life, the extent of it

being comprised in the old woodback Dilworth spelling book and addition

in arithmetic, and what he may have acquired after manhood was by

absorption, through a comprehensive, penetrating and discriminating mind

upon all questions presented to him. Upon this talent, and enforced by an

indomitable energy, he built up an extensive business education or

qualification, which gave him character of one of the most enterprising men

of his county. But with his better qualities he possesses others less valuable

- that of an extremely nervous, sensitive, impulsive, and combative nature,

that frequently gives him occasions of great humiliation and pain.

In early life he developed great love for military tactics, and was promoted

to command of a militia regiment, from which he derives the title affixed to

his name. In the year 1856 he was appointed clerk and master of the

chancery court at Pikeville, Tennessee, and served as such until 1865. This

was the first field of his business education, where his natural love and

talent for the law was rapidly developed and at the close of the war he was

licensed to practice at the bar, with a knowledge and fear of his inability as

a public speaker to make a success of his profession, hoping that time and

labor would overcome his nature defects. But in a short time he became

disheartened and surrendered his profession, for a wider field of activity

and constant labor. Into this he entered and found a checkered and

uncertain field, but indomitable energy and love for excitement gave him

much success in business, mixed with many failures, in all of which his legal

knowledge served him admirably. In this field he became an extensive

stock dealer, and also, of general merchandise, and lastly, has done an

extensive business in mineral lands, with a large balance sheet in his favor.

The last and most fatal error of his life was in 1891. He bought twelve

thousand dollars of stock in a national bank, whose annual reports showed

a prosperous and lucrative business, but in 1893 its discounts and loans

proved almost worthless and the bank failed with the loss of the entire

capital.

His business principles were always conducted on the faith and conviction

that "the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof " ; for God hath said, "It

is me that giveth the power to get wealth" that "the Lord buildeth up and he

teareth down" that "the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be

the name of the Lord forevermore." And whilst in the frequent success of

business beyond that of many men of like intellect, he always attributed the

same to the Lord, and tried to thus acknowledge him by unstinted acts of

charity without ostentation or pride. And when, in his hasty and impulsive

business habits, he made grievous mistakes, he humbly submitted without

murmur or complaint, saying, "The Lord chasteneth whom he loveth.

He has been a zealous member of the church since 1848, and for the last

eight years has devoted his life to the study of the Bible, more directly to

the prophecies an revelations. During this time his notes and comments on

these portions of the Good Book have been elaborate. From these, in the

year 1895, he prepared an article for the "Chattanooga Times" showing

from the Bible, that the world is now in the last days of the gentile

dispensations and near the beginning or ushering in of Christ's return for the

establishing of his kingdom on earth, and the destruction of all earthly

kingdoms or governments. This was to be preceded by a time of trouble

such as was never before known or ever will be again. He quoted the

words of Christ's declaration of his return, and those of Daniel's

prophecies of the same period. He showed that the irrepressible conflict of

capital and labor, which is now threatening the disruption and destruction

of every intelligent government on earth, was God's immediate agency for

the destruction of all nations and governments of earth and for the erection

of Christ's peaceable kingdom which shall bless all the nations of the earth

and shall be good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. This

article, by many Bible readers, was regarded as very timely. Some fifteen

years since, Colonel Norwood wrote a long series of reminiscences of the

history of Sequatchie Valley since 1838, as he knew it. This was interesting

and instructive to the older inhabitants as well as the younger, and he has

preserved the only copy of this history known, which should be preserved

and held sacred by the younger generations. About the same time he wrote

a minute history of the life of John A. Murrell, the great western land pirate.

Starting after his discharge from the state prison to the date of his death at

Pikeville, of his peculiar burial, the disinterring of his body, and his

decapitation by two medical students. His head was last seen in a museum

in Philadelphia, Penn. These articles have lately been reproduced by the

"Fayetteville Observer" Fayetteville, Tennessee.

In the year 1841, Mr. Norwood was married to Catharine J. Hoodenpyle,

daughter of Peter Hoodenpyle and granddaughter of Philip Hoodenpyle,

born in the city of Amsterdam, Holland. Mr. Norwood and his wife are

now in their seventy-seventh year and fifty-sixth of married life, and are

living in the house on the farm where his wife was born and which was her

patrimony.

Goodspeed, History of Tennessee, Warren County

The county court of Warren County was organized in March, 1808, at the house of Joseph Westmoreland, half a mile south of Barren Fork, where a log courthouse was afterward erected. Upon the location of the county seat at McMinnville, the court was removed thereto. though early records of this court were destroyed during the late war, and but little or nothing can be learned of the proceedings or of the officers of the same. The same is true of the other courts. The following is an incomplete list of the officers of this court:

W.G.W. Norwood lived with Rachel Kelly for 45 years. He moved to Wayne Co, IN when four years old and to Indianapolis when seven, living in or near that city thirty-eight years. In 1860 he moved to Mt. Meridian, Putnam County, and to Benton County near Mt. Gilboa in 1871. He joined the United Bretheren Church in 1888. He lost his right leg in a thresher in 1868. He had five sons and four daughters and when he died, December 25, 1892, in Benton County, he left two sons and a daughter, seventeen grandchildren and four great grand children. His daughter-in-law, Frances Foster Norwood, also died December 25, 1892, and a double funeral was held at the U.B. Church at Gilboa. The large audience room did not furnish seats for half the 389 sorrowing friends present. The service conducted by Elder Goodwin was very impressive.

Ann Maria died at her home in Indianapolis (on N. Illinois St), June 17, 1902. She united with the M.E. Church in 1836 under Dr. Smith and by her request, men of her church (Meridian Street) were chosen to be her pall bearers and Mrs. Walker to sing at her funeral. Dr. T. A. Goodwin assisted with the services, making suitable remarks upon the life of one whom he had known so long. There were two children.

Abram Bird came to Indianapolis from Kentucky in 1836, about the same time that Edmund Browning came from Dayton, opening the Washington Hall Hotel. He served as stable boy and servant at the hotel while attending the old Seminary, then took a place in the hardware store of Young & Pottage, later opening a store of his own. He died at his residence in Indianapolis (on N. Illinois Street) 8/20/1881 and the place where their home stood for so many years is now occupied by the Roberts Flat.

He served from 1856 to 1861 as County Treasurer, was a dry goods merchant for years, and later was in the real estate business. They had two children.

Joseph B. Mercer

Joseph B. Mercer is a well-known citizen of Chicot County, and is a leading merchant of Dermott. He was born in Greene County, Tenn., April 24, 1852, and is a son of Elbert F. Mercer, who was a native Tennesseean, born in 1812, and was reared and educated in his native State, making Tennessee his home until his death in 1867. He was a successful farmer for many years, and by his industry and frugality amassed a handsome property prior to his death.

Being a man of fine business attainments, he was elected county clerk of Greene County on the Democrat ticket, and this position held for fourteen consecutive years, being at last displaced by the reconstruction measures adopted in that and other Southern States after the termination of the Civil War. He was true to all the interests and principles of the Democratic party, and was always active in the support of its measures and doctrines.

He was an exemplary member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and for many years prior to his death was an elder, taking an active interest in church and Sunday-school work. His religion, being a part of his life, was duly observed in all his intercourse with his fellowmen, and his public and private record are a monument and tribute to his memory.

Mary A. (Norwood) Mercer, his wife, was born in Blount County, Tenn., in 1816, and was a daughter of John Norwood, a Tennesseean, and was reared, educated and married in her native State, making her home there until she passed from life in 1858. She and Mr. Mercer were married in 1831, and ten sons and six daughters blessed their union, fifteen of whom are living: Elizabeth, Recina, Wayne, Martha, Thomas, Charles, Franklin, James, Catherine, Joseph B., Mary, William, Nannie, Hugh and Mary A. John died in infancy. Eleven of these children are married and have homes of their own.

Joseph B. Mercer resided in Greene County, Tenn., throughout his youthful days, and received a fair academic education in the Masheim Institute, but believing that Arkansas presented better opportunities for a young man to succeed in life than his native State, he removed thither in 1870, when but eighteen years of age, and for two years worked as a farm laborer in Chicot County. He then turned his attention to railroading, securing a position as fireman on the Mississippi, Ouachita & Red River Railroad, and at the end of two years was promoted to locomotive engineer, which position he held for about ten years, faithfully discharging his duties to his employers and with great credit to himself. At the end of this time he again interested himself in agriculture, his labors being conducted on a farm on Bayou Bartholomew in Chicot county, Ark., and after being thus occupied for four years he entered the mercantile business at Dermott, where he is still holding forth, his stock of general merchandise being valued at $3,500 or $4,000.

Besides this property he owns the only livery stable in the town, and has some valuable real estate near by, seventy-five acres of which are under excellent cultivation, the principal products being corn and cotton, although all the cereals can be raised in abundance. Mr. Mercer is a member of the K. of H., belongs to the Presbyterian Church, and is a model citizen in every respect, and has worked his way from a poor boy to his present honorable position in society.

November 28, 1875, he was married to Miss Margaret McDermott, a native of Chicot County, Ark., a daughter of Dr. Charles and Hettie S. McDermott, a history of whom is given in the sketch of Philander McDermott, and their union was blessed in the birth of seven children, four of whom are now living: Katie Belle, Eula Sue, Charles F. and Ethel. Those deceased are Mary W., Ethel O. and Mary Anna. The mother of these children died on April 3, 1889, she having been a member of the Presbyterian Church, a devout Christian, whose heart was full of love for her Master and for suffering humanity. She reared for herself a monument in the hearts of those around her that will live for years to come. She was an exemplary wife and mother, a kind and sympathizing friend to those in distress, and her death cast a shadow over many a heart outside of her own stricken and sorrowing household.

I found an Elbert Mercer in Greene Co, TN that apparently married a Mary Norwood according to the IGI. It doesn't say where or give a date or any information on Mary in the IGI file. It also showed him born in Washington Co, TN which would definitely be the right area of TN for the John Norwood family.

I searched my FTM Marriage records and found a marriage for an Elbert F. Mercer to a Mary Ann Norwood in Blount Co, TN on 10/20/1840. That would make her at least a second wife from the census records listed below. I could not find any other marriages for him in TN in my FTM Marriage Records. That should make from Martha on down thru the last one in the 1860 census her children with him.

There were a lot more children than was shown in Nancy's Ancestry file that Kitty found; however, the earlier ones could have belonged to an earlier wife. But the ones she shows conform with the 1850 and 1860 census names.

From a Bio on D. W. Mercer in 1887 Goodspeed's History of Greene Co, TN)

His parents, Elbert F. and Rachel (Thompson) Mercer, are natives of this county. The latter died December 7, 1838. The father then married Mary A. Norwood, a native of Blount County, Tenn., and after her death, June 20, 1860, married Charlotte Hull, a native of Greene County. He died March 19, 1887. He was a deputy sheriff of Blount, and a trustee of Greene County, several years. Mr. Mercer was of English-Irish origin, and followed carpentering and farming. He was a son of John Mercer.

All of the field officers were from Bradley County. On March 11, 1865, the

5th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment, Colonel S. B. Boyd commanding, was directed to report by letter to Major General J. B. Steedman, Commanding District of the Etowah, to whose command the regiment was assigned.

On April 30, 1865, it was reported in the District of the Etowah, unattached

to any brigade. On June 1, 1865, it was temporarily attached to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Separate Division, Army of the Cumberland, and was directed to render reports to the commanding officer of that brigade. These were the only references to the regiment found in the Official Records. Dyer's Compendium states the regiment did garrison duty at Dalton and Marietta, Georgia; was engaged in a skirmish at McLemore's Cove, Georgia, February 1, 1865; was on an expedition from Dalton to Coosawattie River and Spring Place, Georgia, April 1-4, 1865; and was mustered out July 17, 1865.

Thomas Manson Norwood was born in Talbott Co, GA on 4/26/1830. He was the son of Caleb Merriman Norwood and Jeanette (Jane) Manson. He graduated with an A.B. degree from Emory College in 1850.

He taught school in Monroe Co, GA in 1851. He was admitted to the Georgia bar in March of 1852 and established a private practice in C.S.A. in Savannah, Ga. He was elected US Senator from Georgia from 1871-1877. He was also a candidate of one of the two factions of the Democratic party for Governor of Georgia in 1880. He was a member of the George House of Rep from 1885-1889. He resumed practice of law in Savannah, GA from 1896-1908. He retired on January 1, 1908. He was the author of the following: Plutocracy, or American White Slavery (politoc-social novel). 1888; Mother Goose Carved for a Commentator, 1900; Patriotism, Democracy or Empire - A Satire, 1900. His home was Harroch Hall in Savannah, GA where he died 6/19/1913. He is listed in Who's Who in America.

"Stephen C. Mitchell, familiarly known as "Lum" died at his home in Bolivar,

Friday August 19, 1904, and was buried the following day in Greenwood Cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by Reverend G. J. Hunt, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Stephen was born in Blount Co. Tennessee

September 18, 1831, and lacked only one month of being 73 years of age

at the time of his death. Stephen came with his parents to Polk County

in 1835 and he has resided here ever since. He enlisted in the Union Army

and served until 1864 when he resigned as Second Lieutenant of the Company

of which his brother, L.J. (Lafayette Jackson) was Captain. He was twice

married, first to Miss Martha A. Hendricks of Arkansas on January 22, 1859,

who died August 16, 1892. To them were born nine children: Lafayette A.

(deceased), Alice C., Austin A., Albert P., an infant who died shortly

after birth, Emma J., Edward L., Mattie E., Mark C., Stephen was married

a second time to (Dru)Cinda Austin, who with the six children above named

survive him.

He was a Christian, having been converted at the Mitchell Campground, long

famed as a revival meeting place, and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church

of Bolivar and continued a faithful member until his death.

About the close of the war in 1867 or 1868, he engaged in merchandising

in Bolivar, where he continued until the day of his death, though in later

years he has given over the management of his business to his sons. He

was one of a large family, who are noted for their strong physique, and

enjoyed unusually good health until his last sickness. He was a man of

rugged honesty, who would miss a sale of goods rather than misrepresent

an article. Perhaps no citizen of the county ever gave more constant attention

to his business or took so little recreation. His death takes another of

the pioneer citizens, who have done so much for the upbuilding of our town

and county and whose ranks are being rapidly diminished by the ruthless

hand of death. Peace to his ashes."

John Alexander Duncan served in the Civil War Company "I" 87th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out at a rank of Sergeant. See publication of his Civil War Diary from 1864. Service dates were 8/15/1862 - 6/16/1865.

Note: James M. Dougherty, age 23, born in TN (a saddler) was living with John and Elizabeth in the 1860 White Co. Census. He died in the Civil War.

John and family lived in Missouri in 1869. Moved there after 1867. Not in IL in the 1870 U. S. Census but back in IL in 1880 U S. Census. They were in IL in 1867 and back by 1876 because Joseph and David were born in IL at those times. They were in Butler County, Missouri during the 1870 U. S. Census and presume that is where their daughter was born. I did not find any family names near their census to indicate that they might have gone to be with any relatives that I am aware of.

There may be another child born and died while they were in Missouri.

Death Came Unexpectedly to S. R. Duncan

Prominent Citizen and Pioneer of this Community Died Sunday

Another of the pioneers of this section of the country has passed to his reward and a man who has for many years been a familiar figure on the street of Arcola will be seen here no more. Samuel R. Duncan, farmer and broomcorn broker, died at his home on North Locust street at 1:10 o'clock on Sunday morning.

His death occurred unexpectedly after a few days illness and was a great shock to the members of his family and his friends in this city. It is true that for several months he had been a sufferer from rheumatism and has been confined to his home for a great part of the time but until Friday evening no particular alarm was manifested over his condition. An impaction of the bowels furnished a serious complication which baffled the skill of his physicians. late Saturday a consultation of doctors was held, Dr. Emil Reis, a famous Chicago specialist and Dr. Fuller, of Tuscola, being in attendance. They could hold out little hope to the family and but a few minutes after they left the house Mr. Duncan suffered a stroke of apoplexy which caused his death almost instantly.

The funeral services were held at his late home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock p. m. Rev I. M. Bennington, pastor of the Arcola M.E. church, being the officiating minister. A large number of the residents of the city and vicinity were present to pay their last respects to an old and much respected citizen. The interment was in the Arcola cemetery. As a testimony of respect the business houses were closed from two til three o'clock Tuesday.

Mr. Duncan was a native of East Tennessee, being born at Marysville, in that state, November 30, 1837. He resided there until he was about sixteen years of age and then came to Illinois, locating first in Crawford County, where he lived for a few years. He came to this section of Illinois in the sixties, at which time he was engaged in farming, south of the city. Afterwards he engaged in the broomcorn brokerage business, until a few years ago being a member of the firm of Duncan & Tarbox. In late years he had been in the business for himself. Two-one years ago he moved to this city and has resided here ever since,

Mr. Duncan was married to Miss Margaret Kellam, who survives him, in Richland County, IL, September 6, 1860. Thirteen children were born to them of whom ten are now living. They are: Joseph P., Wichita, Kan.; J. H., Thomas, OkIa., William, Leeds, Okia.; Mrs. George H. Clark, Mexico, Mo; Mrs. J. L. Moore, Chicago; Mrs. Frank Quirk, Knox, Ind.; Mrs. Al Daily, Miss Minnie, Samuel and Fran, Arcola.

In life Mr. Duncan was a robust specimen of manhood; a type of the hardy pioneer. He was one of the men who helped to make this section of the country the fertile farming region it is to-day. In common with the rest he encountered the hardships and discouragements of the early days, struggling to grow crops in the un-drained, swampy fields with primitive implements of agriculture, standing off attacks of ague and malaria, helping in the development of the wilderness and living to see it blossom into the finest farming country in the world.

He was a man of decided character; out-spoken in his views and fiery in his denunciation of molly-coddles and grafters. In politics he was a life-long democrat and always took a lively interest in political affairs. With all he was a good citizen and is mourned by many friends as well as by the members of his family.

Pg.561: SAMUEL R. DUNCAN (RN=2095), of Humboldt Twp, born in (MAD:

Blount Co.) Tennessee, Nov. 30, 1837, son of Joseph and Susan (Norwood) Duncan of the same State. They were the parents of eleven children, five boys and six girls. (WRP: See also Samuel Jr. #12 below) Joseph Duncan came to IL in 1844 (Note: WRONG He was still in the 1850 Census of Blount Co, TN, see notations of when really came from articles/obits on Joseph's children), locating in Crawford Co. where he lived the remainder of his life, died May 6, 1863; date is memorable because, though late in the season, snow fell steadily during the day. Mrs. Duncan still resides in Arcola (WRP: in 1887), as do also her daughters, Mrs. Mary Todd and Mrs. Minerva Ritchey. Joseph and William are residents of Iowa; James of Kansas; John is in Carmi [White Co.], IL; and Mrs. Mattie Burton resides in Danville, IL. Mr. Duncan a Democrat.

Samuel R. Duncan was reared to farming, ... log cabin common schools in Southern IL 40 years ago. Sept. 6, 1860, he married Miss Margaret, daughter of Jesse and Charity (McMichael) Kellam, at the home of the bride's parents in Richland Co. this state. Rented land for farming for two years, then moved to Crawford Co. for 5 years, then to Arcola, where after 3 years, he rented land in Humbolt Twp for 11 years, then purchased 400a farm; in 1881 raised ... Mr. and Mrs. Duncan are the parents of 12 children, named as follows:

James Duncan Died At Sullivan

James W. Duncan a brother of the late S. R. Duncan, of this city, died at his home in Sullivan on Tuesday. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs. Mary Todd, in Sullivan, Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock and were conducted by Rev. J. R. Bradley. Burial was at Greenhill cemetery.

Deceased was born at Marysville, Tenn., April 18, 1842, and at the time of his death was aged 75 years, 10 months and one day. he as married but his wife died several years ago. There are two children surviving.

Mr. Duncan has visited in Arcola several times in recent years and was well known here.

He moved to Crawford Co, IL in 1852 with his family. During the Civil War he enlisted at the age of 18 (1864) with his mother's concent. Moved to Crawford Co, IA (Paradise Twp) around 1875?. Joseph died after an operation for appendicitis at the Denison, IA Hospital on a Sunday. There were 11 children, 3 dying in infancy.
