That the said James Dever (Diver)..will well and faithfully serve, his secrets keep, his, and their lawful commands everywhere at all times readily obey, hurt or harm to his said master he shall not do, nor willfully suffer any to be done by others..the goods of his said Master he shall not embezzle or waste, nor them lend without his consent to any, at cards, dice or any unlawful game he shall not play, nor get drunk, nor swear on any account. Taverns or disorderly houses he shall not requent, fornication he shall not commit. Matrimony he shall not contract, from the service of his said Master he shall not at any time depart or absent himself without his said Master's leave.
He shall contantly attend church on all Sundays and Holy days unless prevented by sickness or other unavoidable accident... and the said Revd. Thomas Butler, President of Mount St. Mary's College and his successors, on his and their part, doth hereby covenant, promise and agree, his said apprentice, the art, trade and mystery of boot and shoemaking and mending it its varieties thereof shall and will teach and instruct or cause to be sufficiently well taught and instructed after the best way and manner in his power..during said time good and sufficient meat, drink, bed, board, washing, lodging and other necessary requisites. Also to teach the said apprentice at night school each and every year of his aprenticeship, from the 1st day of Nov. until the 1st day of March, from 6 until 9 o'clock each night...and at the expiration of said term of four years.. the said Master doth hereby agree to give to his said apprentice fifty dollars current money.
