My Thoughts on In-School Suspension

I believe In-School Suspension is not a viable solution to the growing number of behavioral problems facing our schools that include, but are not limited to, excessive tardiness, insubordination and using profane language in the presence of a faculty member. In fact, this form of discipline, which is unlike any other, is extremely detrimental to the essence of school, the education of children. I also believe that more emphasis is placed on discipline rather than learning, and that this practice should be discontinued. Despite the fact that this practice is carried out only in secondary education facilities, the effects on mental and social health can be extremely dramatic, especially at this pivotal time in a child's life, where uncertainty is relevant. In-School Suspension has its own consequences, despite its benefits that are far less important than the ill effects of this drastic practice.

Mental health is affected by In-School Suspension in many ways, such as changing routines at lunch and in the way a student learns. In-School Suspension also poses problems mentally for parents and makes for a more stressful situation. Also, in some school districts, the requirement for a pupil to complete all of the work that is assigned in In-School Suspension and to remain working may be extremely dangerous to one's mental state. This is because, as a situation where no work is available arises, the student is usually forced into copying a dictionary or some other form of busy work. These unusual assignments might cause a student to become resistant to doing the work assigned and suicidal because of the nature of the work. These threats are serious and are usually not taken lightly, but a student should not be driven to the extent where he or she is in the process of possibly taking their own life.

The social health of an individual is also greatly affected by the dramatic implications of In-School Suspension. Strict guidelines for the environment prohibit socialization between pupils. This practice is detrimental for teenagers lead extremely gregarious lives. Also, not only does In-School Suspension destroy the bond between peers, but also from teachers, our guides to the future, by preventing communication between those who know what they are talking about and what we need to know. This lack of communication between teacher and student can eventually cause the student to fail academically, too. Finally, preventing socialization during one's childhood, even for one day, will only hurt the child in the future.

In conclusion, many of the implications of In-School Suspension are detrimental to a student's health. Therefore, it should be removed in time so more students do not suffer the pain that many other have already felt. Also, more emphasis should be placed on teaching our children and not discipline, so they will be prepared for the future.

As you can see, I wrote this essay as it would be if it were written by an adult from their prospective if they really saw what went on in these situations. I also wrote this from past experience and am disgraced that the practice is still carried out on a daily basis. Tell me what you think.
