Word Alone is a resource bank for grassroots organizers in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) who believe that the Word alone is our denomination's only source of spiritual authority. Because of this belief, we are called to a state of confession about present efforts to enroll in our denomination in some version of the historic episcopate. Such an effort would either directly or indirectly place our authority not in the Word alone, but in the Word plus a historic episcopate. Our disagreement is with fellow Lutherans who would force us to surrender the Word's primacy to realize a false unity that the Spirit's descent at Pentecost has already more truly and completely achieved.
