The USS SUNFISH sent 42 vessels to the bottom but the JANAC board of 1946 scaled it down to 16 due to poor record keeping (face saving) on the part of the Japanese who denied that the vessels were being sunk! Often, ships were SEEN by SKILLED and TRAINED observers to have sunk BUT since it was never confirmed in the Japanese records, it never happened. Also, U-boats sunk in the Pacific (there was a few) were not credited either.
BUT! The Japanese started the war with 6 million tons of merchant shipping and the Silent Service bagged over FOUR MILLION TONS of it! During that timeframe, they fought: lousy engines, faulty torpedoes, obsolete equipment, and the BuOrd Gun Club. Yet, they still managed to sever the lifeline to Japan's seized Empire holdings and brought them to their knees. The Silent Service was only 1.5% of the TOTAL US NAVY during the war and they suffered 25% KIA in the war. The SUNFISH bagged, confirmed by JANAC, a total of 59,815 tons. She was 16 out the top 25 scoring subs of WW2. BRAVO ZULU men!
The USS SUNFISH was a GATO class diesel boat that was turned out from Mare Island in May of 1942 to wreck havoc on the Japanese Empire. My Dad, in the crew's picture, was a SIGNALMAN FIRST CLASS/QM who worked in the Conning Tower, kept the log book, worked with other men on the battle flag, and stood his battle station at the Torpedo Data Computer. Their patrols usually lasted 45-60 days. Dad of course has his cover at a cavalier cock. In the same photo, in the third row, the sixth officer from the left, is Lt Paul Mansell. On HIS left is the formidable Captain E.E. Shelby.
