Marla and Country

My name is Marla and I am owned by 2 Siberian Huskies - Kiska (1 yr. 10 mos.) and Country (1 yr. 4 mos).  Following is Country's story..........

Country developed juvenile cataracts at the age of 8 mos. and went blind from them practically overnight.  At the time we discovered the cataracts, we also discovered a lump on her back paw.  We took her to the vet and he said that it looked like a blood blister and we shouldn't worry about it unless it got bigger.  We really didn't think anything of it (since the vet wasn't concerned) and decided to go ahead with her cataract surgery.  The cataract surgery was a success and Country can now see :)  About 1 mos. after her cataract surgery we noticed that the lump had gotten bigger and took her back to the vet (Late March).  He drew the fluid and I guess he didn't like what he saw and said that he needed to do a biopsy.  He did the biopsy and said that it was very invasive and he couldn't get all of it and
that was the first time he mentioned the "C" word to me.  He rushed the pathology results back for me and the results hit me like a ton of
bricks.....my Country (11 mos. old) had hemangiosarcoma!!

He sent the sample to another company do a second pathology report since he couldn't believe that she had that type of cancer at her age.  On Country's 1 yr. birthday, I got the second set of results (April).  She definitely has hemangiosarcoma.  He did a lot of research for us calling Cornell and Tufts and we were pretty much told that this is a very nasty, fast spreading cancer and there is nothing they can do.  He told me that I needed a miracle.  They give Country a prognosis of 120-320 days.  At that point, someone had referred me to Dr. Martin Goldstein (his book just came out) and I just happened to live about 45 minutes from his office.  I felt that we had nothing to lose and took Country to see him in May.

He has started boosting her immune system and we pray that she will fight this.  Her blood work came back that her immune system didn't recognize that she has cancer which he said was common in young dogs with cancer.  She has made it past the 120 days and is going strong.  Country is due for her follow up with him on August 28th at which point he will redo her blood
work.  It will also be the first time Dr. Goldstein will be able to look at the cancer site since she had a cast on her leg when I brought her in back in May.  I guess that will be the real test of how she is doing.
