What happened on that fateful night remains a mystery, as there were no survivors. A few days later, wreckage pf the vessel was found at the Brandies, Cape Francis. Obituary by Joyce (Way) Bursey

On March 23rd. the residents of Old Perlican and neighbouring communities were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. William H. Bursey at the Cottage Hospital, Old Perlican. Mr. Bursey, affectionately known as Uncle WIll (or Uncle Brit's Will) -- was the oldest resident of Old Perlican, having reached the grand age of 90 years. In the words of St. Paul, "he had fought the good fight, he had finished the course and he had kept the faith."

Regarded as a pillar of his church and community, Uncle Will's philosophy of life, and the high ideals for which he stood were admired and respected by all who knew him. His pattern for living was on a higher plane and presented an attractive example which aspired many to follow in his footsteps.

A good neighbour, conscientiously concerned with the well-being of others, his acts of generosity over the years extended far beyond his own community and he was always ready to lend a helping hand in time of trouble or need. Because of his friendliness and deep person interest in the welfare of others, he enjoyed the loyalty and esteem of many lasting friendships, which he valued for their true worth. It was a rare treat, indeed, to listen to his stories of lifelong experiences, which, though simply told, unquestionably converyed his great concept and understanding, his integrity, and his wisdom in many different situations.

To those of us who knew him best, his beloved influence was closely entwined around our lives. We will ever remember his endearing personality, and his love and concern, which was evidenced in his gentle smile, his loving words, and his kindly deeds - simple things which meant all the world to his loved ones. Little children sensed the magnetism of his love and shared a special association with him, which was a delight, to behold. His passing is an inestiminable loss which can never be replaced.

Uncle Will was born at Old Perlican and spent his early years there. As a young man, he left home to seek employment working in the mines on Cape Breton Island and at St. John, New Brunswick, after which he worked for some time in Boston. Upon returning to Newfoundland, he settled at Old Perlican, anda for many years thereafter was actively engaged in the fishing industry during the summer months, and each spring going off to the ice-fields in the seal hunt. Then too, for 19 winters he carried the mail from Old Perlican to Ochre Pit Cove on horse and sled.

In all, his chosen occupations demanded physical fitness, perserverance, courage, skill and ingenuity. Uncle Will pocessed all these qualities in abundance, but the predominant feature of his life was faith in God which motivated all his plans, and which gave a quality of excellence to his every undertaking.

Each day of Uncle Will's life was deicated to the service of his Devine Master, so that he portrayed in living reality the great words of Horatius Bonar: "Be what thou seemest; live they creed; Hold up to earth the torch devine; Be what thou prayest to be made; Let the great Master's steps be thine." Daily he read his Bible and spent time in prayer and meditation, therewith deriving a peace anda jow which were reflected in his everyday living. And, because "God is Love", then the keynote of his life also became "Love". Perhaps, Uncle Wil's greatest happiness came, when the Sabbath Day, with his family around him, he invariably worshipped at the House of God, where he loved to lift his voice in hymns of thankfulness and praise. Intensely concerned about his church, he served faithfully on its boards, and laboured for it in many ways.

Then, too, he was keenly interested in all aspects of community life, and gave unstintingly of his advice, his time and his service on Boards of Education, Fisherman's committees, community planning, or in any needed capacity.

On March 25th his family anda friends from far and near gathered at Saint Andrews by the Sea United Church, Old Perlican, and later at the graveside to pay their last respects. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. F. Hickman, who took as his text: "The greatest of these is Love." The organist was Mrs. Weston Hospins, and the anthem by the choir was Uncle Will's favourite hymn, "My Saviour first of all." Members of the Loyal Orange Association attended in a body and participating in the service. The love and esteem felt for Uncle Will were manifested in the many friends who visited the family in their bereavement, the many cards, messages, telephone calls, floral tributes and monetary gifts to the memorial fund of the church.

Left to mourn their sad loss are his loving wife Mary, two sons: Ronald at Old Perlican, and Hedley at Saugus, Mass. Three daughters: Violet (Mrs Wilfred Peach) Blackhead, Nfld., Audrey (Mrs. Eric Peach) Wakefield, Mass., and Norma (Mrs. Chesley Chapman) Timmonium, Maryland; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchilden, was well as a large circle of relatives and friends.

Uncle Will has been called home to a higher service. We will miss his gentle ways and his kind words and his habit of dropping in for a little visit and a cup of tea. Often, the silent tears will fall -- dewdrops in the garden of golden memories that are exclusively ours, and that we will forever cherish.

"Sleep on, beloved, sleep and take thy rest; Lay down thy head upon they Saviours breast; We loved thee well, but Jesus loves thee best. Goodnight!"[9]

Obituary

23 Nov 1996, Daily Evening Telegram, Lynn, Mass.

David S. LeDrew, 21, died aboard Navy ship

Seaman Recruit David S. LeDrew, U.S. Navy, 21, of Fairmount Avenue, died Saturday by accident aboard the U.S.S. Nicholas, Portsmouth, Va. He was the son of David A. and Karin M> (Bursey) LeDrew.

Born in Lynn, he was a lifelong Saugus resident, graduated from Saugus High, class of 1994, and attended North Shore Community College. Mr. LeDrew joined the Navy in April, 1995, and earlier this year completed a six-month deployment and 30,000-mile voyage to the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia, aboard the U.S.S. Nicholas. His ship was part of an international armada assembled to enforce United Nations santions against the former republic of Yugoslavia. His crewmates questioned more than 1,100 vessels suspected of smuggling arms. He visited Greece, Italy and Turkey during his 134 days at sea.

Mr. LeDrew also leaves a sister Jillian C. LeDrew of Saugus, his grandparents, Ralph and Ruth (Bruce) LeDrew, and Hedley Bursey and Laversa (Lloyd) Bursey, all of Saugus; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A service with full military honors was held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Cliftondale United Methodist church , 493 Lincoln Ave., Saugus. Burial was in the Riverside Cemetary Veterans Lot.[19]

The serivce, led by the Rev. Pagano, Cliftondale Methodist Church and Chaplan Kreiensieck was attended by more than 400 with standing room only in the church. Cousin Wanda (Lloyd) Rudokas sang a moving solo of "Wind Beneath My Wings" followed by his uncle, Bruce Bursey, who provided the eulogy.

The line of cars from the church to the Riverside Cemetary was reported to have been a mile long, stopping traffic in Saugus Centre by those who drove from the church to the cemetery. Following a 21 gun salute, the U.S. flag covering David's casket was folded by eight of his shipmates and handed to his grieving mother by the Commanding Office of the U.S.S. Nicholas. Family members, friends and members of the U.S. Navy gathered at Karin and David's house following the service.
