Gideon LAMB for 3 years or during the war; that they marched on with others to the Southward under his command.- That on the 22nd day of June 1779, the said Demsey fell in an Engagement at Stono, and the said Charles died in the Hospital within a few days either before or after the fall of the said Demsey. Holloman Page 50 The term "Neuse River Country" refers to the lands lying in the drainage basin of the Neuse River and all of it's tributary streams. These land and the lands in the drainage basin of the Tar River (known in its lower reaches as the Pamlico River) comprised the historic domain of the Tuscarora Indian Nation, a confederation of a number of powerful tribes of Iroquois origin. In the coastal region of Carolina natural landmarks other than streams, water bodies, and their shorelines are extremely rare. Consequently, the Tuscaroras defined the territory of the nation and each tribe by reference to the waters that served it. The original Craven Precinct was defined by this Indian Custom. The Neuse River below present New Bern (site of the former Indian town Chattuaka) belong to the Neusiok tribe. Above the confluence of Trent River and Neuse at New Bern, the Neuse became Chattukena. Contentnea Creek was the River of the Catte tribe. Torquena was the River of the Tor, who shared its lower reaches with the Pampticoe tribe. That is the origin of the names Tar River and Pamlico. Archdale Precinct of Bath County was created in 1705. Its name was changed to Craven Precinct in 1711 when old Craven County of Carolina was thrown into South Carolina by the divorce that totally separated the two Carolinas. Settlers arrived at the site of New Bern in July 1710 and founded the town of New Bern at that time. Some fifteen months later, much of the town was burned when the Tuscarora War began. Thomas HARRINGTON b. c1789 #Rutherford Co, NC d. 1872 Clay Co, MO m. 18 Mar 1852 Clay Co, MO-- Sarah MARTIN land grant 1824 Clay Co, MO I have no idea how reliable the group data is, as I found the family group record in an internet database and then supplemented it with marriage records and other info but the spousal data is in conflict with Barbara Parsons data which shows Sarah Shipman as the wife of Thomas HARRINGTON b. 1741 son of Thomas b. c1716 son of Thomas and Mary Whitmel HARRINGTON. The above Thomas is shown to be the son of William b. 1725 (wife unknown), (brother of Thomas b. c1716) who had another son Charles who was born 1745 and lived in Tryon Co, NC, and died 1796 in Sumner Co, Tennessee. Can anyone sort out the Sarah SHIPMAN thing, which one she was married to??? My information is that Sarah SHIPMAN was the daughter of Daniel SHIPMAN. I found a bunch of SHIPMAN descendants with a son named Daniel in 1850 Ripley Co, Missouri, where some of the descendants of the Hickman Co, Tenn Harringtons were living in the 1870's. Coincidence? I don't know. Hoping that someone will have the answers to this family group. If the above data is generally reliable, this Sarah (Shipman?) HARRINGTON would have been widowed in 1790 with young children to raise. The above Deed Records of Rutherford Co, NC show a Sarah HARRINGTON deeding land to Mark DEDMAN in 1799. Sons Charles & Jacob would have been 21+ by that time. And indeed we see 4 of these sons-Charles, William, Jacob, and Thomas--deeding land to Willis Weathers in 1821, but apparently not residents of NC at the time.
