Stormy Weather for Jan. 5
~ Brainstorming That Is ~

As we start this New Year we'd like to begin our first meeting on Tuesday, January 5, 1999 by having an open discussion on issues and topics that are important to the membership.  There will be no guest speaker.
Twin County will always be one of our issues, but what other concerns do you think need to be addressed?  Jot down your ideas and bring them to this brain storming session…  Is anyone interested in holding a "Civic Garage Sale"?  Our treasury is running low.  Should we increase membership dues?
These are just two of the ideas that have been mentioned.  Bring yours and let's get a feeling for what we should consider for 1999, the last year of the 20th century.

December Holiday Party

Thanks to Rae Campolettano and helpers for hosting our holiday party.  There were lots of cookies, cake, soda and a super hero from the West John Street Deli.  A good time was had by all - fine company, plentiful food and beverages and plenty of time to enjoy it all.  We're already looking forward to next year's party!

Thank You Members

You were really most generous this Christmas.  Members brought presents, food and financial contributions like never before.  You definitely brightened one family's Christmas and are to be thanked for your generosity!

Charlotte Avenue Cleanup

Thank you volunteers!  If you have driven along Charlotte Avenue since December 12th, you can't help but notice the change.  Working with the Duffy Park Civic, Charlotte Avenue was cleaned from West John Street to Duffy Avenue.  Over 30 large bags of trash were cleaned up - newspapers, Styrofoam cups, plastic and glass bottles and even the remains of a 1950's hubcap.  As always, a special thanks to Agway for allowing us to drop off the trash.  They've been most helpful.  The cooperative effort was arranged by the Beautification Committee.  Thanks to Harry Petersen, Bill Spettman, Greg Yatzyshyn, Marian McNamara, Len Ober, Karin Franchino, Art Uhlich and Dale and Linda Bennett, Charlotte Avenue is looking better than it has in twenty years.  Let's hope it can stay clean.

Thank You Alice & Helen

Thank you Alice Groody for your time on the board and for redoing our constitution.  We hope we can count on you to update it for us when future changes are made.
Thank you Helen Lafferty for serving as our recording secretary.  Helen is involved with several organizations and we hope she will keep us up to date on school affairs.

Civic Officers

The 1999 officers were sworn in at the December 7 meeting by Legislator Edward Mangano.  Election results  were reported in the December Update.  All of those who received votes for the office of recording secretary, in the November election, declined the position.  Greg Yatzyshyn volunteered to serve in this office and was appointed by membership vote at the December meeting.  He was subsequently sworn in by Ed Mangano.  Thank you Greg!

West John Street Sump Maintenance

On December 12, Legislator Ed Mangano met with Sharon Sherry at the sump on West John Street concerning issues relating both to the nature preserve and the Beautification Committee efforts.  He was shown the tall weeds and debris in the nature preserve area, the deteriorating concrete discharge apron in the sump, the thousands and thousands of Styrofoam cups in bottom of the basin, the only sump access (which is through the DeJana property) and the dead trees and litter just inside the fence along West John Street.  As a result he has asked Nassau County Department of Public Works to initiate the following:
1)  Arrange to cut back the weeds and remove debris from the bird sanctuary area.
2)  Survey the storm water basin and locate a new gated entrance to the county retained portion of the basin to include a properly graded entrance to the interior.
3)  Arrange for an overall cleaning of the fence line and remove debris from the interior portion of the storm water basin.
The goal is to perform a comprehensive rehabilitation of the basin and establish an accessible and practical entrance for routine maintenance activities.

A VISIT TO THE CIVIC

'Twas the night of the Civic Meeting
And all thru the Northwest
The members were wondering
Just who'd be our guest?

The coffee was made
By Len Ober with care.
He was hoping the cake
Soon would be there.

Rae welcomed members,
There's nothing to dread
Visions of fifty-fifty money
Danced in our head.

The members arrived and
All found their seats.
Enjoying hot coffee
And baked goods for treats.

Then Len with gavel
Brought the meeting to a start
And we all stood and pledged
With hand over heart.

Millie our secretary
The correspondence did read
And Terri told
Just how much money we'll need.

The Civic will do
A holiday deed
And choose a family
To help out and feed.

Away to the supermarkets
We flew like a flash
And brought to the meeting
Canned goods, gifts and cash.

Then out in the hall
We heard such a clatter.
Was it Santa, elves or Mangano?
We learned it was the latter.

His eyes how they sparkled.
His teeth how they gleamed.
Ed really had the spirit,
Or so it just seemed.

With a smile on his lips
And a raise of his hand
He swore in our board
Then heard our sump plan.

W
hen what to our wandering eyes should appear,
But Greg Yatzyshyn in full battle gear.
His clothes were all covered with ashes and soot
And he smelled just like asphalt
From his head to his foot.

More rapid than eagles
His curses they came
And he whistled and shouted
And called them by name.

Now Vacco, now Venditto,
Parola and Dunn!
Now Mangano, now Herbst,
Cowen and Finn!
Now all you people its time to stand tall,
Help the NorthWest take this issue to the wall!

We've had it with odors,
All the stresses and strife.
The best Christmas present
Is our quality of life!

And to this cause,
The Bennetts added their name.
Let's clean up West John Street,
The walks we'll maintain.

And suddenly there was heard,
An angelic chorus.
It was none other than Bill,
Jane, Marian and Dolores.

They spoke not a word,
But went straight to their work
And cleaned up the papers,
The litter and dirt.

And we heard people exclaim
As they went down the street
"God Bless Our Hicksville
Lets Keep the Town Neat!"
