      Two Butterflies by Emily Dickinson

Two butterflies went out at noon
      And waltzed above a stream,
Then stepped straight through the firmament
      And rested on a beam;

      And then together bore away
      Upon a shining sea,--
Though never yet, in any port
      Their coming mentioned be.

If spoken by the distant bird,
      If met in ether sea
      By frigate or by merchantman,
      Report was not to me.

      A Student's Guide to Butterflies
This is a great resource to use for module studies on the butterfly! The author breaks down the studies in modules to make it even easier for the "teacher"!

      A Butterfly Project
Have the child fold a sheet of construction paper in fourths. You will have 4 squares that you can use to show the development of a butterfly.

Use cavatelli for the caterpillar, small circlular pasta for the eggs, shells for the chrysalis and bow ties for the butterfly.

Have the child draw where the stage is taking place in each square. (Example on a leaf, hanging from the leaf, flying in the air)

Child then should glue on the appropriate pastas in the order that they occur. They can then draw in arrows showing the life cycle in action.

Older children can label each square with it's scientific name of each stage.

      Physical Education and Music Activity
Give child a sheet to use... something colorful works best but any sheet will do.

Have the child hold two opposite corners of the sheet, making "wings".

While playing soothing, music allow the child to fly like a butterfly around the room or yard.

You will notice the child will keep beat with the music while flying. This feeling of freedom in flight is something a child relates to very easily!

Discuss the musical piece you used and what the child felt as they were flying.

Subjects covered by this unit study include but are not limited to:
Literature/Reading, Science, Art, Writing, Music, Computer (if child is allowed to use the internet pages provided above) and Gym
