Austin's Birth Story
It all began on April 28, 1999. (Wed) I arrived at Wayne Memorial Hospital to begin Cervidil, a procedure used to help rippen the cervix to prepare for Pitocin induced labor. My starting status was 50% effaced with zero dilation. Baby's head was at -2 station. Cervidil was to remain in for 12 hours and pitocin was to be started at 6:30 or so in the morning the next day to induce the contractions. The following day the pitocin was started and I went through 12 hours of labor and contractions before I was examined and was told that I had made no progress and was not dilated at all. Baby's head had come down to almost -1 station but that was as far as I had prgressed. The induction was stopped and I was sent home with orders to rest for three days and they would attempt the induction a second time.

On May 3, 1999, I again arrived to be induced a second time. This time I went straight to the pitocin and never had the Cervidil. Again the attempt failed after I struggled through 12 more hours of labor and did not dilate at all. They wanted to try a third time but I refused! They instead told me to go to my normal apt. at the doctor's office that Friday. When I got there they told me that I had to try one more time and that if I did not dilate after the third attempt I would get the c-secions because the baby's head was getting to big for me to deliver. So again I retured. (May 9, 1999) for the Cervidil. This time the Cervidil put me into my own labor and I never had to do the Pitocin. After almost 24 hours of my own hard labor I was examined and told that I had not dilated at all and baby's head was still high. I was then brought in for the C-secion. I chose to remain awake and got the spinal. At 8:14pm on May 10, 1999, I heard Austin Alexander cry for the first time.
