"Dear
Crabby..."

(March, 1998)

"Dear Crabby - How did you come by your nickname? You don't look crabby to me - actually, you look pretty happy!" - Xerxes

Dear Xerxes - I am what is known as a "shy dog" - I was the runt of my litter and raised in a barn, without much socialization with people or other dogs. Consequently, I started out very fearful, and did a lot of snapping and growling. But with lots of gentle and positive training, I'm now a very happy dog. I am grateful that my humans are experienced dog-owners, as a shy dog can become aggressive and dangerous, and shy dogs are not for everyone!

"Dear Crabby - My parents are looking for another golden to join our family. I'm worried they won't love me as much when the little furry-butt gets here. Golden puppies are SO cute... will they forget about me? Also, will the puppy take ALL my toys? Will I get jealous? What if I HATE the new dog? I hate to admit this, but I think I "might" be spoiled... will that change, too? I've always been an ONLY dog... the center of my humans' world. What should I do?" -- Riley

Dear Riley - it's natural to feel apprehensive about change, and I understand why you'd feel insecure about getting a new sibling. Yes there'll be changes in your life, but also some great opportunities! Your mom and dad might not know everything about managing two dogs, so they will count on you to teach your new sister all the important "doggy" things, and I'm sure they'll reward you for a job well done. Also, with a new puppy, there are usually MORE toys to go around, and if you share YOUR toys with your sister, I'm sure she'll share hers with you!!! (after all, what choice will she have... she'll be smaller, at least for a while, and by then you'll have her trained!!) All in all, I think you'll look back on things and wonder why your humans didn't find you a playmate sooner.
