I have only been working on genealogy for about eight years. Much of that has been spent trying to use the Internet. During Christmas vacation in 1997, and more times subsequently while visiting my sons and families, I was able to go to the National Archives for a brief visit. I found a lot of census material; but, for those familiar with genealogy, I have less concrete information than I started with. For example, my grandmother Margaret Catherine (Maggie) LANE immigrated in 1885, 1888, 1889, and 1890 (from County Galway, Ireland) depending on which source I want to believe. She, and most of the rest of the ancestors I found have at least two or three different ages and/or birthdates (depending on how many censuses I found). Also, as many of you know, names change a lot in spelling between countries and over the years.
These comments are not intended as any orientation to genealogy, only to introduce you to me and my lack of expertise in genealogy. What is on these pages is some information on my family and some links to possibly help you. For family members [no matter how extended], there may be some errors or incomplete information. If you have provided info to me that is not included, please be patient. I am not as fast as I once was!!
I want to especially thank my sister, Jane Donahue BONINE for her information and continued review and research efforts especially the LANE, ALBRECHT and MEYERS families. Likewise, on the LANE family I want to give special thanks to Craig Todd who has done extensive research, particularly on the Patrick LANE side of the family as has Patrick KING for the CARNEY family. To the many other cousins who have asked for or provided information please accept my humble thanks also. If you find something in here that is helpful, let me know. If you find errors or have additional information, please do not be bashful in letting me know. THANKS TO ALL!
One of my greatgrandfathers was Patrick DONAHUE, and he arrived in this country as a lad (via Nova Scotia), allegedly in 1841. He was born in 1833 in Tipperary Co., Ireland according to the family, in 1836 in Limerick Co., Ireland according to his death certificate, and in 1840 according to the 1880 and 1900 census. This is typical of my success so far in genealogy.:-) On the DONAHUE link here, I have provided an outline of the descendents of Patrick DONAHUE. For more information, please e-mail me.
I have also listed some additional DONAHUElinks for Donahues, but cannot guarantee they will help you or remain current. I was going to add some RONE links as I found them for Jane RONE that Patrick married, but according to the marriage license application of his son [James M. DONAHUE, my grandfather], provided me by Craig Todd mentioned above, Patrick was married to a Jane MONIGHAN. I will continue to try to track down this greatgrandmother's family as time permits and add either RONE or MONIGHAN links.
Another of my greatgrandfathers, on my father's side, was Connor LANE. Connor married Mary HIGGINS in 1855 in County Galway, Ireland and did not immigrate to the United States. Connor's brother Pat LANE did immigrate and settled with a great number of relatives west of Three Forks, Montana where I was raised. I have some additional information on that Pat LANE family. On the Connor LANE link here, I have provided an outline of the descendents of Connor LANE. For more information, please e-mail me. I have also listed some additional LANElinks for Lanes; and HIGGINSlinks for HIGGINS, but can't guarantee they are current or will help you. If I find further information on the HIGGINS side, I will also provide a HIGGINS outline. For more information, or if you have any connections, please e-mail me.
I have added a short outline of an Unknown LANE to show the relationship of Connor and Patrick as brothers. It will be noticed that I also show a John LANE, a George LANE and a Mary LANE as syblings to Connor and Patrick. This George LANE is tied to the family only by one source, but if it is accurate he was known as Clubfoot George LANE and was hung by the Vigilantes in Montana in 1864. Finally, I have placed an outline for Pat LANE family for information to those cousins. I hope some of this is helpful to other researchers.
On my mother's side, my greatgrandfather, Adolph ALBRECHT came from Prussia in about 1863. He married Alma MEYER [Myer, Myers, Meyers, etc.] who was born in 1850 and immigrated in 1852. They settled in Nebraska, and were in Columbus City in 1880, and Omaha in 1900. My sister, Jane, has found a good deal of new information that will soon be added to these pages. There is an outline of the ALBRECHT family at this link (updated December 2004), and a short one for Alma MEYER also (likewise updated December 2004). I have listed a few ALBRECHTlinks for Albrecht, and MEYERlinks for MEYER, but can't guarantee they are current or will help you. For more information, please e-mail me at jdonahue5895@charter.net
On my mother's other side, my greatgrandfather was John CARNEY son of Francis CARNEY. John came to America via Boston, with his mother Catherine [father Francis being predeceased] and family sometime between 1855 and 1859. They settled in Corning, NY; then moved to Watkins, NY by 1865 (later called Watkins Glen) where they were through the late 1870s. In 1878, John moved to Ouray, Colorado along with his brother Francis where they were in 1880. John married Jane HOEY, daughter of Alex HOEY and Mary ARGRAY (possibly Barkley) about 1863. The outline of Francis CARNEY is shown at the CARNEY link and the Alex HOEY outline is shown at this HOEY link. For more information, please e-mail me. I have also listed some additional CARNEYlinks for Carneys, and HOEYlinks for HOEYS, but can't guarantee they are current or will help you.
I have identified a few links to genealogy sites below but they cannot be guaranteed current. More may be added as time permits. There are numerous links for genealogists, and I cannot begin to keep up with them. The most comprehensive listing of sites is the one that Cyndi Howell maintains: Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet
Many genealogy pages now contain multiple links to others. One such that has most of the links on line is: GenealogyOnLine
There are numerous newsgroups dedicated to genealogy by locations such as: soc.genealogy.ireland, and soc.genealogy.german or alt.genealogy and soc.genealogy.misc.
Probably the largest genealogy database is Rootsweb. Others maintained on Rootsweb with county, state and international breakdowns, like Genweb, and the immigration ships transciption project, Compass are invaluable.
Of course, federal locations such as the National Archives (NARA), Bureau of Land Management (BLM,GLO) General Land Office records are also invaluable. There are also bulletin boards, query programs, the Latter Day Saint's Ancestry site, and the Family History site on-line, and many individual and family sites. Some other links follow.
One link I would refer you to is that of the
As mentioned, another site that is a must for all genealogy information is
Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet
maintained by Cyndi Howell, which has links to almost all sites on the net (100s of thousands of links in many categories and more on the way). This is rated the best genealogy site on the Net by many groups, and has received innumerable awards!
Another link that is wonderful and who's webmaster is a lot of help on newsgroups is
Likewise, Steve Lacy maintains one of the finest links to genealogy on the internet with his Genealogy
GatewayTM To The Web
More links and family information on the following surnames will be added as time permits: HIGGINS, MEYER, RONE or MONIGHAN. Of course, these are only my grandparents' names, so there are more such as TAGUE, ROONEY, CREHAN, and ARGRAY etc. which need to be added also.
I would like to add other links, and try to keep these up to date as soon as I have time. However, most of those above do a better job of keeping current reference links than I would ever be able to do.
Stay tuned, and maybe I'll surprise you with more new and updated information!!!
