Will of Patrick Archbold

In the name of God Amen. I Patrick Archbold of Donegall Township in the County of Westmoreland and the State of Pennsylvania. I cooper [which means a maker of barrels. If so, we don't have to wonder too much about what he made barrels for, Westmoreland being in the heart of the "Whiskey Rebellion" country where the still owners were mad as hell in the early 1790s over the first federal tax on grain alcohol] being of sound mind memory and understanding but considering the uncertainly of this life think fit to make this my last will and testament in the following manner viz I recommend my Soul into the hand of God and my body to the earth to be buried in a christian manner. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give divise and depose of the same in the following manner and form. First I give and bequeath to Mary my dearly beloved Wife her maintenence cloathing [clothing spelled with an a] together with all necessary accommodations during her natural life and after her decease to be buried in a christian manner at the expense of both my Sons Thomas and John Archbold. Also I give to my well beloved elder Son THomas Archbold four hundred and twentyfour acres of land, the place where he now lives with the appurtentances there to belonging forever except fifty acres of land a reduction of the same which I give to my well beloved Daughter Mary Ferguson (Widow) which she is to inherit during her natural life and at her death she is at the opinion [this probably means option] to sign it over to whom she thinks fit. Said fifty acres of land bounds from Harbisins spring to William Rosses line to extend as far along the ridge N.W. so as to make out said fifty acres. Also I give to my well beloved younger Son John Archbold the place and mills whereon he now lives with the appurtenances thereto belonging forever. With this exception that Moses Awl is to have fifty acresof the above mentioned place on the North side including the Sugar camp.[I haven't been able to find out what a sugar camp was, but I suspect it might be like an earthen cellar where one could seek shelter in a storm or even stay a night or two if necessary. It also could have something to do with making whiskey.] Provided he the said Moses Awl excepts the same. I likewise constitute make and ordain Thomas & John Archbold to be my sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament all and singular my land messuages and tenements. To have and to hold the same to their heirs and Assigns forever. And I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannul all and every former Testaments, Wills, Legacies, Bequests and Excutors by me in any ways before mentioned willed and bequethed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In Witness where of I have hereun to set and seal this 24th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred 1800. Signed Sealed and declsred by the said Patrick Archbold as his last will and testament in the presence of us John Means John Ambrose Barclay.
