This cubical building is known as the KAABA, it is located in the Holy City of Makkah in present day Saudi Arabia. It was originally constructed by Prophet Adam as the first place of worship to god, however the people of the area drifted away from the belief in the one god and it was desecreted. Then the KAABA was rebuilt by the Prophet Abraham along with his son Ishmael, finally after his time the people of the area the Arabs once again started to worship idols and in fact they kept there idols inside the KAABA until God sent the Prophet Muhammad to clense the KAABA of all idol worship and he reinstated the KAABA as the place of pilgrimage to GOD

The Crescent and the Star is the Muslim symbol of peace, secondly it also used by many muslim countries on their national flags to show the muslim majority. In some cases one may notice just the crescent being used for display. An example is that just as Christian countries display the Red Cross so the Muslim countries use the Red Crescent symbol.
