But is wanting
to go enough? Will everyone who wants to go find themselves in
Heaven for eternity? If not, what else is necessary for us to
live with the Lord after we die? We will search the scriptures
and find the answers to these and many other questions.
Notice where I said we would find the answers...in the scriptures.
Jesus tells us He has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew
28:18). We will look for the answers to our questions
in the only place authorized to provide them...the words spoken
by Jesus during His life on earth, and revealed by the Holy
Spirit after His return to heaven. To consider any words
spoken by man as authoritative we will have to find proof within
the scriptures of Jesus' providing His approval to the authority
claimed by man. If this cannot be done, the words spoken
by man must be considered void of religious authority. An
open Bible and an open mind are essential to a proper
understanding of God's word. Should you have questions
about anything you find on this site please let your Bible be
your guide. We will be judged by the words spoken by Jesus
(John
12:48). The words spoken by Jesus were not spoken on
His own authority, but He spoke only what God instructed Him to
speak (John
12:49,50). Men do not have the authority to speak
anything more or less than that we have revealed in the
scriptures. To do so invites error and everlasting
punishment. Please do not risk your eternal soul on the
opinion of another, no matter how well respected they may be.
I have no special qualifications. I possess the same
attributes each of you possesses...the ability to think and reason in
an independent fashion. I ask you to rely on this ability as
you consider the things we study. It is possible the
conclusions we draw from many of the concepts we examine will differ
from those you have been taught. If so, I again ask you to rely
on your God given ability to reason as you strive to properly
understand the words of Jesus.
This site is a
work in progress. In my secular life I am a practicing
physician. In the Lord's church I've served as a deacon and as the
teacher for the Sunday morning adult Bible class. Currently I have the
privilege to preach for the Chibana church of Christ in Okinawa, Japan. Much of the material in
this site is gleaned from my study in preparation for Bible classes or
sermons. I plan to invite contributions from other Christians strong in their knowledge of God's word. Such contributions
will be noted. Please visit often, as I hope to update on a
regular basis.
I
appreciate the sites who provide online Bibles, lexicons, and
dictionaries. I make frequent use of their resources.
Should you use this site as a link to other religious web sites
please open your Bibles and your minds as you consider the thoughts
they present. I plead with you to do the same as you evaluate
the material I present. As I said before, I have no special
knowledge given to me. Everything I present is done so only
after careful study and research of God's Word. My sincere hope
is for all to spend eternity in heaven, as I'm sure is your desire
since you've spent some of your valuable time opening God's Word with
me. God in His mercy has shown us the way to eternal life.
It is up to us to determine to follow the narrow way which leads to
life (Matthew
7:14). As we go through our studies you will hear me refer
to this narrow way often. We have been shown the way, but we
must follow exactly the footsteps of the savior in order to reach
heaven. I have chosen the background you see as a reminder of
this fact. The goal of this web site is to generate a desire
for all my students to follow exactly the footsteps of Jesus as we
live our lives on this earth. By living our lives in such a
fashion we are assured of our place in heaven for eternity. But
to wander from the path He walked is inviting danger and the risk of
eternal punishment should we die in such a state.
God's Word is powerful, able
to divide soul from spirit, joints from marrow, and discern the
thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews
4:12). I will not try to "soften the blow" the
scriptures may inflict on the hearts of those who are actively
seeking to understand God's truth. One of the challenges
teachers face is to present material to their students in a fashion
the students can understand, but not take away from the impact of the
material being taught. My goal is to present God's Word in a
way which is easily understood by all studying with me, but to allow
it to use its power for change, and to direct the feet of those
willing to follow its lead along that narrow path to eternal
life. Some of my comments may seem strong--they are meant to be
so. Again I ask that you open the Word of God as we go through
our studies and determine for yourselves the truth of His Word.
In the end, we will each answer for ourselves as we stand before God
at the Day of Judgment. I hope the lessons we study together
will help you as you continue your walk in this life, and prepare you
to stand before God in that great Day of Judgment. Thank you
for studying with me.
