FREE POP E-MAIL SERVICES!!!
There are a large number of Free
E-mail services being hawked on the web these days, such as Hotmail
and MailExcite, but the majority of these require you to do all of one's
reading and writing of e-mails on the web site. A Free POP E-mail
service, however, would enable one to send and receive e-mail quickly and
efficiently, using an e-mail program, such as
Pegasus, Foxmail, Kaufman Mail Warrior, or Eudora Light,
(as well as those which come bundled with the big two browsers)
(all of which are free) for that purpose, and doing almost all of the actual work
offline. A number of the services below have begun offering both POP and Web options, which can be useful if one sometimes needs to access e-mail from a cyber-cafe or the LAN at work, but usually wants to use POP and SMTP at home.

Time for another quick update!

This time around, we have made a number of changes, and more are planned. Apart from the usual pruning from and adding to our list, we are going to try and list services in *loose* order from the (in our opinion and experience) best on down. Please note that we have decided to discontinue listing POP-only services.

One of the other happy trends that is also growing rapidly worldwide is that of free Internet Service Providers (ISP's). Many of these also offer free POP access. We're still debating whether to include these here, on a separate page, or simply include links to other pages which in turn have links to free ISP's. I suppose we're leaning towards a separate free ISP listing, if/when we ever get the time. For now, we'll gradually introduce some of these here, as well as leave on this page those (such as NetTaxi) which have begun a free ISP service of their own.
.
Please remember that a number of free services have actually
discontinued their SMTP service because spammers were using and clogging their
service. One good trend with many of the newer services, and which we applaud, is to require POP authentication before sending (i.e., SMTP access) in order to discourage spammers--a pain at times, but certainly preferable to discontinuing SMTP altogether! PLEASE DO NOT USE THESE SERVICES TO SEND SPAM!!

Mail and News --The one which we use as our primary address, free IMAP service as well as reliable POP and SMTP; impressive. Also offers secure web-based mail access, as well as free access to sending and receiving e-mail (in the US) via a toll free phone line!. Domain name is mailandnews.com

GMX --The well known and reliable POP/SMTP/Web service from Germany now has an English page! (as well as Spanish--see below!) Remember that when using e-mail software, one must put one's full address for "username"

Coolmail.ch (Swiss) --Another variation on an irresistible domain name, with both reliable SMTP and POP service, and the fastest signup process we have ever seen.

Crosswinds --Provides reliable POP/SMTP/Web, and are very strict on spammers! Includes free, unlimited web space as well!

Mail Options --A service with free SMTP and POP, and a number of cool domains. Required to receive some limited "promotional" e-mail as well, but their service is very good.

Umailme--A new SMTP and POP service which enables one to log into any POP account from the web as well.

Yahoo--Surprise, surprise. POP access is now available for Yahoo account holders. One now has only to sign up for it under "options", and allow them to send one spam a week. However, even on outgoing SMTP mail they manage to attach an extra "Do you Yahoo?" signature--pretty annoying.

Freemark --A Macedonia-based free SMTP and POP service. Reliable. Domain name is freemail.org.mk

Net Taxi--Offers a free POP/SMTP/Web/Home Page and now free Internet access as well!. Domain is nettaxi.com

EMatic--A free service featuring POP, SMTP, Web access, home page, and a "virtual hard drive" to store your extra files on. Wow!

Caltiger--A Newly Free ISP based in India which also offers free POP and SMTP service. One can go through their rather extensive registration process, and if not based in India forgo downloading and installing their connect software.

SoftHome--Offers reliable POP and SMTP service. Can be slow at times. Please note though, that to discourage spammers they allow for a maximum of 9 recipients for any one e-mail (which we think is kind of lame), and you have to access your POP account first before you will be allowed to send on their SMTP server (now a widely spreading practice). Domain name is softhome.net

Topteam/web.bg--English-language POP/SMTP/Web/Home Page service based in Bulgaria; account is activated within 24 hours. Seems reliable. Address format is: yourname_@web.bg; we wonder if the required underline at the end of the username may be confusing to some.

InstanMail --A new free SMTP and POP service from Indonesia. As with Softhome, one must access the POP (receiving) server before being able to access SMTP (sending) server, to discourage spammers

Auraland--A newer free POP/SMTP/WEB/HOME PAGE service based in Argentina, with their page in both English and Spanish.

Visual Cities --Free POP and SMTP services, plus free web space and a bunch of extras. Domain is visualcities.com

KKEV Mail --Another new free SMTP and POP service from Malaysia. Domain name is KKEV.net

Personal Connections---Another POP/SMTP/Web service based in the UK. Has at times been slow, but has been around for sometime and is likely to remain. Domain is pmail.com

Turbosport Formerly Computer Central, they are back and offering free POP/SMTP/Web services. Forwarding also available, with 35 MB of storage and two additional domain names: NTscan.com and mailplanet.net (as well as turbosport.com)

Net Fraternity --Now with both POP and SMTP, with no storage limit for e-mail. Users must authenticate through POP before using SMTP. Domain is nfmail.com

Telebot--Back again by popular demand, with free POP, SMTP, IMAP, and web access, as well as a number of other services. Reliability still erratic, though.

Populus Mail --One more of the new free POP and SMTP services. Domain is pplmail.com

For Free--POP/SMTP/Web/Home Page provider based in Austria. Domain name is forfree.at

Little Blue Room --Free IMAP and SMTP service; must send e-mail to set up account.

PolBox--Poland based English language service offering a free home page as well as POP and SMTP access. 1 Mb mailbox limit is pretty small. Domain is polbox.com
