This month
we are beginning with a short unit on geology. Learning about rocks
and minerals, how they are formed, and how they
can change will serve as an introduction to our next region, the
hot deserts. Our science, social studies, reading and writing activities will all be integrated into
this Desert Unit. We will focus mainly on the North American Deserts
and the Sahara. The students will learn how these two deserts are alike
and different. They will learn about the plants, animals, and people and
their cultures of these regions. By the end of the unit
each child will have created a book of the things they have
learned.
In math
we are working on subtraction with regrouping, two regroupings, and across
zero. I am finding that many of the students still need to memorize their
basic subtraction facts. Many times they are able to complete the process
of subtraction but make errors in their computation. We continue
to practice using the steps of the Problem Solving Method.
Understand, Plan, Solve, and Look Back.
This is especially
important as we begin working on multiple-step word problems. Before the month is
over we will also begin multiplication.
