Pascal Haney was a Civil War veteran who fought with the Union forces. I have the muster record from his service. He volunteered with the 14th Kentucky Mounted Cavalry. He enlisted in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. He mustered out in Maysville, Kentucky on Sept. 16, 1863. By verbal report from my father and grandfather, some of the family was not happy that Pascal fought for the Union.

Pboebe's application for pension contains several bits of information about Pascal's old age infirmities. He was hemiparetic for the last 10 to 12 years of his life.

Pascal had a stroke in 1881 or 1882,which partially paralyzed his arm. by the statement of H.S. Logan, his family doctor he never recovered the use of this arm. A neighbor, Daniel G. Ham, stated that Pascal had a "partial paralytic stroke of his shoulder, arm, back and hip. Ham was postmaster at Pine Springs, Rowan County Kentucky at that time and said that Haney was a frequent visitor to his post office. Ham frequently had to help Haney off and on his horse on account of said paralysis. Ham stated that Haney's disability gradually increased until his death.

March 29, 1900 in Rowan Co. Ky. (Source: Rowan Co Marriage records.).

Notes for Millie Ann Thornsberry:

Aunt Millie, one female daughter,Mrs Walter McRoberts, her daughter-in-law,Ruby McRoberts and her son Harrison McRoberts died in the Morehead flood of 1939. This was described by the newspaper the Morehead Independent dated July 6,1939. Millie lived on Pond Lick Branch of the North Fork of Triplett Creek. This branch is just east of the town of Munson, which is on the map of Rowan County, on Cranston Road. There is however little evidence of a settlement at this location on the road. Aunt Millie's house had burned to the ground sometime before the flood. A temporary house was built right on the creek. This is the house in which she resided when the flood hit. There was room to have built on higher ground, but this was not done. Dad speculated that the small house on the creek was to have been replaced by a permanent home on the high ground. To have room to built this house, the temporary one was located on the creek bank. Had the house been on the high ground the tragedy would not have happened.

Dad remembers that Herb moved a two story house from Haldeman to Gates, Kentucky and that the house got stuck in a ditch, and blocked the road for 3 days until it could be placed back on the roadway. Dad said that Herb often took jobs for less than they cost or at a cost that would offer little profit.

Notes for Fletcher Travis Ingram:

My dad,Arthur Hall, related the following to me concerning the violence at the polls in Pine Springs or Pine Grove near Cranston in Rowan County Kentucky. I never knew the dates of these events until Jo Ann Ingram Groskreutz sent me her book. My grandfather,James Hall, and my great-grandfather Floyd Dee Hall were at the polls some time before the violence erupted. Floyd told James "lets get away, there's going to be trouble."

Floyd was no stranger to election day troubles in Rowan County. His mother nee Clarinda Martin was an aunt to John Martin, one of the men envolved in a fight in Pine Springs in August,1884. Sol Bradley was killed during a fight between Floyd Toliver and John Martin. John Martin shot Floyd Toliver on Dec. 2,1884 in the bar-room of the Gault house in Morehead. Later Craig Toliver,Floyd's brother and others took John Martin from a train while he was in custody awaiting trial for murder, and killed him.

Several of the Martin women were intimately involved in the ongoing feuding and murders. Floyd Hall and Clarinda Martin Hall were never involved although they were relatives and neighbors of the Martins. My grandpa always said that Halls stayed out of it because none of them had high power rifles. This doesn't quite ring true, because several if not most of the victims were ambushed using pistols. I think Floyd's sympathy lay more with the Tolivers,as John Martin had been a member of the ruthless Underwood faction and had been accused of killing his own brother-in-law before these events. Floyd may have just been following the age-old Kentucky adage..."a bad run is better than a good stand."

At the 1905 election, Sheriff George Hogg and three of his sons,Ray Hogg, Charlie Hogg and Tilden Hogg were involved in the fighting. My father never had any information as to who started the shooting. It didn't seem to matter to anyone in the backwoods of Kentucky anyway. Two of the Hoggs,Ray and George suffered mortal wounds. Charlie Hogg stabbed John Shumate and the knife lodged below his scapula (the shoulder blade). Fletch (as he was called by my family) shot Charlie to get him away from Shumate. Fletch pulled on the knife several times but was unable to remove it from Shumate's back until someone suggested that Shumate hold his hands over his head. Apparently the knife had penetrated the ribs and when Shumate lowered his arms the scapula caused the knife to be tightly embedded.

I never knew any of the legal follow-up and whether any charges were filed against Fletch Ingram. I knew that he was never jailed. My dad only remembered seeing Fletch once or twice. Once in 1928 Uncle Fletch and Grandma Phoebe Ingram Thornsberry Haney visited my grandparents Jim and Chloe Hall. My dad was ten years old at the time and relates that Phoebe asked Fletch who he thought would win the presidental election between Al Smith and Herbert Hoover. One of the hillfolk legends says that the "golden spider" will predict the winner by writing its name in its web. (I am a scientist and never believe such nonsense...but I saw Kennedy's name written in a spider web in 1960.) Believe it or not. Anyway,Fletch, who spoke with a stutter said that he saw a spider's writing and "hit, hit, hits long enough f-for Hoo-oover."

Ray and George Hogg were taken to the Hogg's two story home to recover from their wounds. Ray was placed in an upstairs bedroom and George in a room downstairs. When Ray died the following day,it was said that his body was lowered out a window rather than being taken through the house, in order that his father would not know that he had died. George Hogg succumbed to his wounds two days later.

Tilden Hogg had come to Pine Springs with a new 38-special revolver.

He got off one shot and the revolver spring broke or jammed. He was unable to fire again. Tilden, who my father later knew personally, suffered only a minor at least a nonfatal neck wound. My dad said that Uncle Jim Haney,Chloe Hall's brother, bought that gun from Tilden. Tilden Hogg later owned a farm in Cranston,Ky and sold fertilizer and farm supplies. Tilden's wife,Lusonia and two of their sons attended Morehead State Teachers' College and became teachers. My dad said that the three Hoggs often walked by his boyhood home on Big Perrry (now Ky. State Road #799),on their way to school in Morehead.

The youngest son, Willie Hogg was not involved in the election day violence. Willie later lived at the head of Big Perry. My dad remembers picking paw-paws in his woods.

Charlie Hogg survived and carried a bullet, which had lodged in his back near a kidney, for the rest of his life. He and his wife Sara were long time neighbors and friends to my grandparents,James and Chloe Hall. Sara or Sari as granmaw called her,was a close friend. I remember visiting Sara Hogg when she lived on Route #60 in downtown Morehead,Ky. My father and I visited her during family trips to Ky. until he died about 1960. My father said that Sara and Chloe often wondered why none of their children married the other,as the families were so close. When my dad related this story and I asked him why he thought this was so he said, "they all seemed like brothers and sisters to me."

John Shumate had unloaded a borrowed 32-caliber pistol on the unfortunate Hoggs. While he attempted to reload,Charlie Hogg jumped him from behind. Shumate recovered from his knife wounds. In another family connection to these people,my maternal grandmother,Nora Thompson, then age 17,was living with the Shumate family as a "servant" at the time of the 1900 census.
