Levi LUFKIN

Levi LUFKIN has proven to be extremely difficult to find. Below are the notes that I have on him and other Lufkin's that might relate to him.

Levi LUFKIN was born about 1748 (His pension records list him as age 72 in 1820). He died after 1830 in Derby, Orleans, VT. (Vermont census 1830)

Enlisted April 9, 1781; discharged Dec 31, 1781, Salisbury, NH, 1st NH Regiment.(Rolls and Documents relating to Soldiers in the Revolutionary War...NH) pg 296 - Levi Lufkin member of 6th company, 1st regiment commanded by Colonel Cilley 1781, Private, page 521 was "of Salisbury, NH (formerly Bakers town), pg 827 found on list of soldiers belonging to Continental Army for the Town of Salisbury "enlisted during the war", reported by selectman of Salisbury 23 Mar 1781. He was a private.

The following history is from "The History of Merrimack and Belknap Counties, New Hampshire". Edited by D. Hamilton Hurd and Published in 1885. In November, 1781, the following soldiers enlisted for three months, and were returned to Colonel Stickney's regiment: Moses Fellows, Matthew Greeley, Benjamin Sanborn, Elisha Shepard, Levi Lufkin, John Smith and Samuel Saunders.

From the History of Salisbury, NH, Levi Lufkin joined first regiment commanded by Co., Cilley 6th Co. 9 Apr 1781.

From the Town Records of Warren, NH, Levi Lufkin was listed on the "Inventory of Town" from 1788 to 1807 and as an inhabitant taxpayer for the same period of time. He was also on a committee to report to the town proprietors from 1797-1799.

A Levi Lufkin is on the 1790 census from Warren, NH and again on the 1800 census from Warren, NH.

Shuah Lufkin believed to be his daughter was married to Samuel Follansbee 2 Dec 1793 in Salisbury, NH (town records)

Other Lufkins

Moses Lufkin (ca 1755-1846)was ploughing in the field, when he heard the alarm from Lexington. He served as a drummer at the siege of Boston. His account of the suffering army at Valley Forge is remembered by this descendant, who was forty-two years old when her father died in 1846, aged ninety-one.

Stephen Lufkin (1733-1803), served in Capt. Samuel Blodgett's company, Col. Enoch Poor's regiment, 1777, and reenlisted, 1780. He died at Chester, N. H. Stephen Lufkin, (1733-1803), signed the agreement to oppose with arms the demands of the British and served two enlistments in the militia from Chester. He was born in Ipswich, Mass.; died in Chester, N. H.

A Stephen Lufkin is listed as a resident of Chester, NH in 1776 ( Inhabitants of NE 1776 by Emily S. Wilson - Genealogical Pub Com 1983 974.2 Wil, p. 71)

A John Lovekin is on a list of petitioners in Kingston NH in 1748 to petition for a new town - Sanbornton, NH. (Masonian Papers Vol 7, pg 165). John Loufkin on another petition for Sanbornton (Masonian papers vol 7, pg 162)

A John Lufkin of Exeter is listed as a taxable head in 1742 (pg 49 of NEW HAMPSHIRE 1732 CENSUS by Jay Mack Holbrook, Holbrook Research Ins. Oxford Mass 1981)

There is an Edward Lufkin who married a Sarah Moody on 6 Dec 1750(pg 17) but I think the dates of the first two children listed here are written incorrectly - Bate born 5 apr 1738, Edward 5 Sep 1730, Hannah 5 May 1751, John 3 Mar 1753 in Kingston, NH or the children belong to another family.
