You may print this in your column if you want, but if not, it's really a letter to you!: Jean,THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Thanks to you, I have met some wonderful kinfolks! When you said you had put my request for information into your column and had a response from Mildred Mashburn, that started a chain of connections that led to a mini reunion two weeks ago at Connessena Baptist Church. Mildred connected me to Esther Dupree, who I e-mailed with back and forth. When I visited my family in Tennessee, I went to meet her in North Georgia. She told my mother and me that a couple of the Farmer cousins were planning to go the Connessena cemetery one day soon to have lunch. We decided to go, and when we got there, there were about 15 - 20 people, all kin!! My mother met first cousins she had either never met or who she had seen when she was so small she didn't remember. It was such fun, and so rewarding for her!! We shared lunch, pictures and some stories, though I'm sure there are many more. The custodian of the church was kind enough to let us use the fellowship hall to eat in. It was a day to remember!! Now I want to plan a larger family reunion, and thanks to you, I know who to start with. It's hard to do that sort of thing from across the country in Colorado. Thanks again! Kind regards, Joan Rankin, Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Dear Jean; My Augustus Frank Pinson (sometimes called A.F., sometimes called Frank)may have had a brother named Martin, but I'm not sure. I do know that my Frank was a son of Eli & Lovicey Herrin Pinson, and was the grandson of Moses Pinson. Frank lived until after 1893, and Nancy until at least 1880. Frank served with the 18th GA Infantry (Davis Guards) from 1861-1865. After the war, the family moved to Van Buren Co., TN (1870 census) then to Wayne Co., TN (1880 census). The last record I have of either of them was 1893, at which time Frank appears on a Wayne Co. state voters census role.I have read somewhere that the GA gov't wouldn't allow the issuance of marriage licenses between whites and non-whites, including indians. Could this perhaps be true and if so explain why there seems to be no marriage license? I had a theory that my Nancy Hudson was the daughter of a white trader named Alford Hudson who was known to have a Cherokee wife, and who relocated with his family to the Indian Territory about 1840. In the 1830 census, he and Frank's father were just a few households apart in Hall County. However, I have corresponded with a descendent of Alford Hudson who maintains that he had only three children, all of whom were sons. Whether he's right or not I just don't know. Do you have any theories? Thanks for your interest and help. Jim Davis

I have been deluged with calls asking about the 1820 census for Bartow County. There was no Federal Census taken for CASS County until 1840. There was a State Census of 1834, I do have a copy of that, another census for Cass was in 1850 and again in 1860, The 1870-1920 census was for Bartow County, True the 1890 census was burned, but if you are doing research in Muscogee County (Columbus) that census was saved. Altogether there are 3 rolls that was saved. The 1930 census will be out in 2002 and at that time many of us that were infants will be on it. The census is taken every 10 years and released after 72 years. A little history of Georgia here. In 1820 there were 44 counties, in 1830 there were 76 counties, in 1840 Cass Co. first census there was 94, in 1850, we gained only 1 county, in 1860-1870 the Legislators were really busy because we had 133 counties, in 1880 we gained 1 more, by 1920 Georgia had 158 counties, the last county admitted to Georgia was Peach in 1924 giving us 159 counties.

The Family Research Library, located at 425 West Main Street with hours Monday through Friday 10:00 am-4:00 pm has all of the Cass Bartow County Census and invites you to come and view them. We also have the 1832 Creek Indian Census and 1835 Cherokee Indian Census on microfilm. These are the census taken of all Indian East of the Mississippi before they were rounded up and marched west. We are receiving new Family Histories books daily and the Owen and Parnick Jennings Death records are a big help in finding your ancestors, birth and place of birth, death, sibling's etc.
