GILCREEST Family From: "Dunkerley, Gary" DunkerleyG@health.missouri.edu To:jbelew@bellsouth.net Jean, I have one other area I would like to pursue in Bartow county, My great grandfather, Jacob Edward Gilcreest was born on a farm near Rogers in 1850 and apparently lived in Bartow county till 1972. He was the fourth of seven children born to Charles Gilcreest and Elizabeth BREWER. Charles and Elizabeth Gilcreest and their three oldest children (Mary Elizabeth, George Washington, and James Perryman)are listed on page 289 of the 1850 Census of Cass County, Georgia. Two younger children (John William and Martha Ellen) were born in Acworth, Georgia during 1857 and 1859.I believe that Acworth, or most of Acworth is now located in Cobb county. I would like to know what county Acworth was located in between 1850 and 1865 I would assume that George Washington Gilcreest(born in 1842)and James Perryman Gilcreest(born in 1844) would have been of age to become involved in the Civil War. I would like to know what Confederate units were formed in their area of the county, and whether either one of them were in one of the units. If you do not have time for this, could you give me some advice about where I could access the records.Sincerely, Gary Dunkerley

Julia Ann Baker, .Rob Cox RobCox@email.msn.com To:jbelew@bellsouth.net I would like to know if you have an on-line census for 1860 or 1850My GGgrandmother was Julia Ann Baker, born 14 March 1845 she married James G. Broughton, b. 12 March 1850 they are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Carterville I am trying to determine if Julia Ann Baker is the daughter of Jeremiah Asa Baker, b. 1813 in GA, and Mary J. Bugg, b. 1823 They had 11 children, including a Julia Ann according to recent information I found on the net....if so, she should be in the 1850 and 1860 census with them. Thanks Rob Cox

I just searched the Bartow web site and am very impressed. I searched for any references I could find to my gr gr grandparents but found nothing. The reason I am interested in Bartow is that my GrGr Grandfather Mark L. Dean enlisted in the CSA at Euharlee, GA, in May 1862. I have never been able to understand why since his home was in Haralson Co. Euharlee is not on a current map but I found it on an old map in Bartow Co. Perhaps you can give me a reason why Mark Dean might have been in Euharlee in 1862. Was it a mining town? Was the railroad being built?

I am trying to write the family history and the mystery of Euharlee is one I would like to solve, or at least give a reasonable reason for Mark's enlistment there. I even thought perhaps he might have married there since I haven't been able to find a marriage record. I didn't find such a record on your web site. He married Martha Watson Andrews 12 Jan 1852. I found the Trail of Tears Org to be interesting because Mark's son John , my grandfather, told his two oldest children that one of his grandmothers was an Indian. He died in 1932 so it was still a no-no to admit such a heritage. None of my cousins who were told that by their parents know which grandmother. Once when I was in Atlanta at the Archives and very discouraged because I cannot find Martha's parents on any census record in NC, GA, or AL, the librarian suggested that Larkin Andrews [her father] may have been an Indian or an Indian trader or perhaps just lived among them. Martha was born in NC in 1832 and the family supposedly moved to GA about 1840. The Dean family moved from Edgefield, SC to Campbell Co just before 1840 and then to the part of Carroll that became Haralson before 1850. The Dean's were evidently looking for gold. They didn't find much if any. Thank you for you interest in genealogy and helping others. I was really impressed with comments that your Society helps people with real proof. I like that. I'm convinced that Mark was in Bartow for some reason but not because his family lived there. Any reason you can suggest will be appreciated. My family history is based on provable family data as well as the history of the times in which they lived and there must have been a historical reason for Mark's having enlisted there. Colleen M.
