PETER BROWN OF WINDSOR


born March 6, 1632; arrived at Windsor 1658; died March 9, 1691/1692; buried at Palisadio Cemetery, Windsor; married Mary Gillett July 15, 1658; she was the daughter of Jonathan Gillet (Windsor Vital Records V. 1, p. 54) Unless noted, all information is from the Gee manuscripts, Hudson Library and Historical Society, Hudson, Ohio.

1) Mary Brown born May 2, 1659.

2) Hannah Brown born September 29, 1660

3) Abigail Brown born November 20, 1661 (Stiles, History of Ancient Windsor) or August 8, 1662 (Gee); married Samuel Fowler November 1683.

4) Hephzibah Brown born November 19, 1664.

5) Peter Brown Jr. born March 2, 1666 (Windsor Vital Records, V. MG1, p. 39); married Mary Barber 22 July 1696.

6) John Brown Sr. (John Brown I) born March 12 or January 8 1668 in Windsor; died February 4, 1728; married Elizabeth Loomis; see below.

7) Jonathan Brown born March 30, 1670; died August 26, 1747; married Mindwell Loomis October 1, 1696; she died March 1, 1767.

8) Cornelius Brown born July 30, 1672; died August 26, 1747; married Abigail Barber (Loomis) December 4, 1701; see page 9 of The Connecticut Barbers for more information.

9) Hester Brown born May 22, 1673.

10) Isabel Brown born June 9, 1676.

11) Deborah Brown born February 12, 1678; married John Hosford April 9,1696.

12) Sarah Brown born August 20, 1681; married Joseph Moore.


Second Generation

JOHN BROWN SR.

( or John Brown I ) was born March 12, 1668 in Windsor, Connecticut, the son of Peter Brown and Mary Gillett; died February 4,1728; married Elizabeth Loomis February 4, 1690 (or 1691 or 1692); Elizabeth was born January 8, 1667/1668 in Windsor and died December 11, 1723. All information is from the Gee manuscripts, Hudson Library and Historical Society, Hudson, Ohio.
Children of John & Elizabeth:

1) John Jr. or John II, born March 11, 1699 in Windsor, Connecticut; died September 3, 1790 in Windsor.

2) Isaac Brown born March 17, 1707/1708 in Windsor

3) Daniel Brown born January 29, 1709 in Windsor.


Third Generation

JOHN BROWN II

John Brown II was born March 11, 1699 in Windsor, Connecticut (Windsor Vital Records), the son of John Brown Sr. and Elizabeth Loomis. John II married March 14, 1725 to Mary Eggleston, the daughter of Thomas Eggleston; she was born May 13, 1702 in Windsor and died August 25, 1789 in Simsbury, Connecticut; John II died September 3, 1790 in Windsor. Unless otherwise noted, source material comes from the Gee Collection manuscripts, Hudson Library and Historical Society, Hudson, Ohio.
Children of John II & Mary:

1) Mary Brown born August 30, 1727 in Windsor (Windsor Vital Records V. 2, p. 289) died unmarried in 1827.

2) John Brown III (Captain John Brown) born November 4 1728 in Windsor and died 3 September 1776 in New York; married Hannah Owen March 2, 1758; Hannah died 18 May 1831. See below for more details.

3) Margery Brown born June 3, 1731 (Windsor Vital Records V. 2, p.291); died December 24, 1775; married David Filley September 22, 1749; no veriÞed issue; may have had a son John Filley born May 2,1773.

4) Esther Brown born September 5, 1733 (Windsor Vital Records V. 2, p. 294) died August 7, 1751 without issue.

5) Ezra Brown born July 25, 1735 (or 1736) (Windsor Vital Records V. 2, p. 294 say 1735); married Cloe Hoskins October 13, 1757; lived in Vermont.

6) Hannah Brown born July 1, 1737 and died August 11, 1737.

7) Azubah Brown born March 20, 1740 (or 1739) (Windsor Vital Records V. 2, p. 294); died young.

8) Hannah Brown born August 17, 1743; died August 6, 1751. 9) Sarah Brown born March 28, 1746; died young.


Fourth Generation

CAPTAIN JOHN BROWN

was the son of John and Mary Eggleston Brown, born Nov. 4, 1728 in Windsor, Connecticut (Windsor Vital Records, v.2, p. 290, Barbour Collection); married Hannah Owen March 2, 1758; Captain in the 8th Co. of the 18th Regiment of the Connecticut Militia; died Sept. 3, 1776 in New York ( Gerald McFarland’s A Scattered People: An American Family Moves West contains a biographical sketch); Hannah died May 18, 1831, age 91 in West Simsbury, now Canton Center, Connecticut (Canton Center Cemetery Records); a memorial marker for Captain John is part of Hannah’s stone. (see Abiel Brown’s Genealogical History of the Early Settlers of West Simsbury)
The Children of John & Hannah (all born in West Simsbury):

1) Hannah Brown born December 24, 1758; died Apr. 1825; 2nd wife of Solomon Humphrey; he died 1834.

2) Azubah Brown born May 7, 1760; died Nov. 1812; married Michael Barber who died 1836.

3) Esther Brown born March 4, 1762; died 1838 in Ashtabula County, Ohio; married Timothy Case; who was born 1731 and died 1830.

4) Margery Brown born January 25, 1764; died 1820; second wife of David Giddings; she married (2) Prince Taylor Jr. after 1793; he had a previous marriage.

5) Lucinda Brown born Nov. 18, 1765; died August 1814; second wife of Russell Borden; belonged to the Canton Center Congregational Church 1785-1795 (church records); moved to East Hartland, Connecticut February 10, 1793 (see Hale Collection)

6) Deacon John Brown born Aug. 31, 1767; died August 11, 1849 in New Hartford, Litchfield Co., Conn.; married (1) Millicent Gaylord; married (2) Abiah Barber Case, daughter of John Barber Jr.; she was the widow of Elisha Case; no issue from either marriage, although Abiah had children by her first marriage.

7) Frederick Brown born Aug. 14, 1769; died Mar. 14, 1848 in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio; married (1) Katherine (Katy) Case; she died 1801 in Colebrook, Connecticut and buried in the Colebrook Cemetery; married (2) to Chloe S. Pettibone in 1808.

8) OWEN BROWN born February 16, 1771; died May 8, 1856 in Hudson, Summit County, Ohio; married (1) Ruth Mills in 1793; married (2) Sarah (Sally) Root in 1809; married (3) Lucy Drake Hinsdale in 1841. Click here for more information.

9) Theodosia (Theda) Owen Brown born January 5 (IGI) or February 16 (W. Simsbury); died November 10, 1846 in Hudson, Summit County, Ohio; second wife of William Merrel Jr.; he was born 1761 died 1830 in Portage County, Ohio, probably in Randolph; his first wife was Elizabeth Wilcox; Theda came to Hudson in 1834 & is buried in the Old Hudson Township Burying Ground; the Merrills were admitted to the Canton Center Congregational Church Jan. 29, 1812.

10) Roxy (or Roxey, or Roxa) Brown born May 29, 1775; died May 21, 1855 in Broome, Green County, New York; married Alexander Humphrey 1804; he was born 1778 and died Oct. 19, 1850 in Conesville, Schoharie, New York; he was the son of Captain Frederick Humphrey); Roxy and Alexander were admitted to the Canton Center Congregational Church June 10, 1805.

11) Abiel Brown born Nov. 18, 1776 after the death of his father; died Mar. 15, 1856 in Canton Center and is buried in the Canton Center Cemetery; married Anna Lord October 16, 1806; she was from Lyme, Connecticut and she died Canton Center March 4, 1866.
