WILLIAM H. THOMPSON

William H. Thompson was born on March 28, 1844/5  in
Edinburgh, Scotland to William and Mary Kelly Thompson.
At the age of about thirteen he left home and stowed away on
a ship coming to  America.  According to family stories he landed
in  New York ( city or state?) and went to work in a hotel no one
   seems to know just where.
He joined the Civil War on August 11,1862 in Brockport, New
York.  According to his pension papers he served in two units
from  there  the First New York Light Artiltry Co. C and the
Co. A 140 New York Infrantry.  He was mustered out at
Elmira, New York on June 17, 1865.
There is a five year period that I have not been able to locate
him in, he said he was in Cook Co. IL. according to his pension
papers, but I have found no records.  He is found in the 1870
Manistee Co. MI census as being single.
He married Elmirinda Johnson (1849/52- 1924) daughter of
Clarkson and Dorothy Bell Johnson,  in Manistee, MI  on
July 12, 1873. They  were married for 42 years and lived in
Manistee, Kalaska, Wexford and Kent counties in Michigan.
William entered the Grand Rapids Civil War Soldiers Home
in Grand Rapids, MI in 1910 and lived there till his death on
February 16,1915. He is in the Civil War Soldiers Cemetery  in
    Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI.
