The McQuaid/McQuade/McQuate Page

This website is devoted to disseminating information about my McQuaid/McQuade/McQuate ancestors and their descendants.  The name was originally spelled MacUaid, but since that spelling is practically obsolete, I will go with the closest present-day spelling -- McQuaid -- to encompass all the spelling variations.  I have been able to trace my ancestry back to Peter McQuaid (actually spelled that way -- sometimes) who arrived in Lancaster County, PA sometime before 1810.  During most of the 19th century, the name was badly mangled by the predominately German speaking people until, by 1870, it was (almost) consistently spelled McQuate in Lancaster County.

Note on the graphic:  All websites need a graphic to grab your attention.  Genealogical websites frequently have a coat of arms or a tartan graphic.  I am resistant to both.  The people that regulate the issuance of arms become very grumpy if you use one that has not been specifically registered to your particular family.  As far as I know, there has never been a coat of arms issued for my family or for any McQuaid family.  Some McQuaids want to use the McKay arms and tartans, but that doesn't work for me.  (More on that later.)  So . . . I developed a unique graphic which I believe will create the maximum amount of annoyance for the maximum number of people.

The following links will be activated one at a time until I have told the McQuaid story as I know it.
