Charles Paul Julius Grosse, "Paul" was born about 1874 in Lichtenberg, Alsace Lorraine, Germany, in an area that is now part of France. According to family lore, his father was the Burgermeister of the town. Paul came to the United States between 1893 and 1895.

    Paul enlisted in the Spanish American War in Baltimore, Maryland in 1898 and was discharged on March 4, 1899. Shortly thereafter he married his first wife, Louisa Rebecca Lubeck on April 12, 1899. His naturalization papers say he was a Baker by trade. Paul and Louisa had four daughters, Amelia, Martha, Marie and Margaret Gross.  Marie and Margaret were twins.

    Paul worked in Baltimore, Maryland as an engineer in a print shop. By 1921, Louisa became ill and they hired a nurse to help care for her at home. Louisa died on July 15, 1921 in Baltimore and within three weeks, Paul married Louisa's nurse, Elizabeth May Jones, my great grandmother. Paul and Elizabeth had only one child--my grandmother Elsie May Gross.

    Paul's life was cut short when a fire broke out at the printing shop and he suffocated in the building. He died on December 26th, 1930.

    Any leads on locating Paul's siblings and parents would be appreciated. The only family lead I have is that Paul may have had at least two brothers, Hans and Fritz and a sister that sang opera professionally. Whether their names are correct or if they ever left Germany is still unproven. E-mail me for more information or with any leads.
