I have often wondered about the "Toole" surname. Was it once O'Toole? I don't know but I hope to find out one day.
The information I have on our Toole line is limited mainly because I haven't worked the line as much as I have other family lines. Still, what I have researched has piqued my interest enough that I've always planned to get back to the line when I could manage the time.
The Toole's merged with our BALLEW family line when Eleanor Margarite Toole married James Harrison Ballew on June 30, 1925 in Everett, Washington.
Eleanor was born April 18, 1900 in Fargo, North Dakota, the daughter of Herbert Enoch Toole and Mary Ann (Sheehan) Toole. Herbert was born February 26, 1866 in Pennsylvania. Around 1898 he married Mary Ann Sheehan, born in Ireland on May 5, 1874, the daughter of Daniel Sheehan who was also born in Ireland. Herbert and Mary had two children, the above Eleanor and her brother Herber J. Toole Jr.
Herbert Enoch Toole Sr. was the son of Alfred Toole and Ellen Jane Schaffer of Pennsylvania. Herbert was employed as a railway switchman for the Northern Pacific Railroad until the time of his death on February 2, 1911, when while at work he was crushed between two railroad boxcars. His death certificate indicates it was an accidental death happening at the" right of way near Fourth Street" in the city of Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota. He was only 44 years old. Shortly after his death, Mary Ann (Sheehan) Toole moved with her two children, Herbert Jr. and Eleanor, briefly to Dickenson, North Dakota and then finally to Snohomish County Washington in 1912 where her sisters were living. In Mary's obituary in May 1934, her sisters are listed as Mrs. Harry Laurence of Lake Stevens, Washington and Mrs. Fred Jenness of Arlington, Washington.
In the 1922 City Directory for the City of Everett, Eleanor is listed as a saleswoman at the Grand Leader Company. At that time her brother Herbert Jr. was listed in the city directory as a bookkeeper. By 1923, Herbert Jr. was a reporter for the Everett News. Like his father, he had a young life and tragic death. In July of 1928 Herbert J. "Scoop" Toole, a sports editor and police reporter for the Everett News, died at Providence Hospital when he suffered major complications after the removal of his tonsils. He was unmarried and only 30 years old. According to his obituary, he had been residing with his mother, Mary, and brother in law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. James Ballew at 2815 Sixteenth Street. I can't help but think how incredibly sad it must have been for his mother, Mary Ann (Sheehan) Toole, when she was robbed of her husband and her only son when they were both young, healthy men.
I know very little about Herbert Sr.'s father, Alfred Toole. I believe I have located him in the 1870 census in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania where I find his name listed as age 17, born in Pennsylvania, and enumerated with a wealthy woman named Susan Anthony age 63, and her family, Elizabeth age 29 and John age 15 and Tilgmarr Anthony age 23. Everyone on the census page is listed as farmers or domestic helpers on a farm, or as a boatman.
I have also found in the 1880 census in
Allentown, Pennsylvania a Ralph Toole age 6 who is listed as enumerated
with a Caroline Schaffer. Ralph is listed as her grandson. Since we know
that our Alfred Toole married Ellen Jane Schaffer, I suspect that this
Ralph Toole could possibly be a brother of Herbert Toole Sr. but that is
still unproven. Either way, there are a lot of records I still need to
dig into and many cousins out there yet to be discovered..... So stay tuned!
