"Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth
It's truly a genealogists dream to have your family lines unfold in just the way you would like. Usually, it doesn't happen that way. Typically, you work a line for a while until you hit a discouraging snag hindering your research for a time. Sometimes a short time...sometimes not. Either way, I can honestly say that tracing our Wyeth family line has been a rare treat. Through the mounds of papers and documents, and the endless hours at research facilities, things just fell right into place. Everytime I would come up with a theory, it would prove to be true shortly thereafter.
Our WYETH line connects to our BALLEW family line when AMY WYETH wed Avinant T. LEWIS in 1823 in Franklin County, Indiana. Amy and Avinant had several children but it's through their daughter, Alcesta, who married Harrison Ballew in Vigo County, Indiana in 1862, that the Ballew and Wyeth blood merge.
Once I found Amy's maiden name was Wyeth, I suspected it could possibly link to the famous Wyeth artists, Andrew Wyeth, N.C. Wyeth and the other very talented and creative people in that family. I knew if that were the case, Amy's family would eventually go back to the northeastern United States. Sure enough, I found Amy Wyeth Lewis was born in Pennsylvania in 1808. Deep into records in Vigo County Indiana, I found there was more than one possibility for Amy's father. I was sure all these Wyeth's I was finding were all connected but it wasn't clear just how yet. So, I set out to figure it out. Sure enough, while pouring through census records and finding out there were Wyeth's living very close by Amy, I was able to determine her father was most likely either a JOSHUA WYETH or an ELISHA WYETH. Within weeks and many letters to Indiana, I was able to prove through bible and probate records that Amy's parents were ELISHA WYETH born 1782 in Massachusetts and NANCY SALISBURY born 1786 in New York.
The Wyeth line is a very talented and distiguished
line. There are several Revolutionary war soldiers. Directly in our line
of descent is Elisha Wyeth's father, Joshua Wyeth who at the age of 15
enlisted in the Revolutionary War along with his father Ebeneezer Wyeth,
both fighting for the state of Massachusetts. Joshua participated in the
Boston Tea Party, dumping tea into Boston Harbor and also served in the
Battle of Bunker Hill. Another Wyeth character is Nathaniel
Jarvis Wyeth , born in 1802. At the time of his death it was said
that practically every implement and device used in the ice business was
invented by Nathaniel Wyeth, but he is known more for being an explorer
of Oregon and the Columbia river region back in the 1830's.
But there are ever lesser known Wyeths who also
did their share. I was amazed to find talents such as painters, doctors,
soldiers and inventors within this line, generation after generation; and
even today, several of our family members have those very same talents
