ROBERT LEWIS DAVENPORT

Robert Lewis Davenport was born September 19, 1945 to Lewis Byron and Leah Mae (Guthrie) Davenport at St. Catherine Hospital in McCook Nebraska while his father was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Bobby was 3 months old when his father returned from the war to take Bobby and Leah to Austin., Texas to make their home, but finding little Bobby with chicken pox delayed their travels for two weeks.

Bobby grew up in Austin, attending Zilker Elementary, Porter Junior High and Travis High School. Bobby dropped out of school after completing eleven grades to go to work in radiator repair shops in Austin, later in Houston, then in New Orleans, LA. When he was 10 years old Bobby was baptized on Easter Sunday, April l, 1956 by Rev. Sidney Hawkins at South Austin Christian Church(206 East Annie).

Bobby loved to fish and hunt with his father, and lived from one duck hunting season to the next ... planning where to hunt and what decoys to use. He also enjoyed swimming and water skiing. He participated in Cub and Boy Scouts. He was a drag race car enthusiast and worked on his own cars. He won several trophies with his drag racing skills.

Bobby and Carolyn Mercer married on October 4,1968. During this union Toff Matthew Davenport was born on June 18,1971. Bobby and Carolyn divorced in 1973.

Bobby passed away on April 14, 1975 at the age of 29 years. The circumstances of his untimely death will always be shrouded in mystery as far as his family is concerned. They feel there is more to what happened in this so-called suicide than the stories than the officials relayed to them ... and the facts were never released to the public. His loved ones only know he was taken from them. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Lee and Lottie Guthrie, grandmother, Lillian Davenport, brother-in-law Travis Biggs and uncle, Dean Guthrie.Survivors include his son: Toff Matthew Davenport. his parents: Lewis and Leah Davenport, sisters: Diana (and Claude) Tarvin, Mauri (and Bill) Burnell, and Linda Davenport.

Funeral services were held at Wilke-Clay funera (Home Chapel in South Austin with Rev. Larry Groh officiating. Interment Was at Capital Memorial Gardens in Austin in the same plot that his parents will someday be ... and Linda has expressed the wish to be buried next to Bobby. Pallbearers were: Arthur Clark, Thomas Thompson, Donnie Carr; Roky Erickson, Tommy Bourque, and Bill Burnell; Honorapallbearers were Sam (Tex) Davenport, Jr. and Clarence E. Hawkins.
