DALE COUNTY ALABAMA HISTORY HOMEPAGE

Dale County is located in the southeast corner of Alabama.The first settlers of Dale County were probably veterans of the Indian Wars fought in Alabama in 1813 to 1817 under the leadership of General Andrew Jackson. During these wars a Block House was built on the northwest side of the Choctawhatchee River.This was a log structure with portholes through which the soldiers could fire in the event of an attack.By 1820 several settlements were present in the area which would become Dale County in 1824. By 1827 several families were in Dale County including the Dowling and Matthews families. Claybank Church, a local landmark, was constructed in 1830.Three hundred families were listed on the 1830 census index for Dale County. Dale County was well represented in the Army of the Confederate States of America during the War for Independence.The founding of Fort Rucker Army Aviation Center in Dale County in 1942 has had a significant impact on the local area.

Luckily the history of Dale County has been well documented through the years.The Southern Star, our local weekly newspaper has been published by the Adams family since 1876.Val L. McGee has written two books about Dale County: Claybank Memories and The Origins of Fort Rucker. The Dale County War Memorial Library also has has an excellent genealogy room.
