HAVE YOU EVER WALKED ALONE

Have you ever walked alone

When the stars were shining bright?

And the moon in all its glory

Shone forth with brilliant light.

Have you ever watched the rabbits

Feeding at a stack?

Watched them running, jumping, playing,

How I wish those days were back.

Have you seen the timid doe,

Her senses all alert,

Ever watchful of her fawns,

Lest they may all get hurt?

Or have you watched the beaver

As it laboured at its dam?

Packing logs and stones and mud,

Till all were tightly jammed.

Have you ever walked alone

When the evening air was still

And listened as you travelled

To the cry of the whippoorwill.

Perhaps you've watched a squirrel

As it raced around a tree,

Hiding its precious winter feed

Where others couldn't see.

Many, many miles I have travelled,

Yet when all is said and done,

Never once could I say

That I have walked alone.
