Oliver Paul McPherson was not only the son in law of James McPherson, but he was a nephew too. He came with James on the trek of 1852 to McGillivray and is reported to have settled on the Lot owned by a Dennis Sutton north of Greenway. Apparently the rigors of settlement life were too great for Oliver Paul and he abandoned his family and returned to Nova Scotia to reclaim lands left by his father. When the McPhersons of Nova Scotia learned of what he had done they ran him off his land and he was never heard of again -- Larry Lee

MARGARET MCPHERSON: Conversation with Helen Jamieson in May 1988: The story she was told as a girl was that Oliver Paul never LEFT Nova Scotia. The more widely known story was that Oliver Paul came to Ontario and then deserted Margaret. He was supposed to have returned to Nova Scotia and have been rejected by the family there after which he vanished.

Helen stated that Margaret and her children lived for a time with James and Ann. Later, Margaret became the cook at Brewster's Mill (see left) at Grand Bend. At the end of her life she was running a boarding house in Exeter. Helen also stated that an obituary of JR, Margaret's son, said that he was the last of a numerous family, but we have record of only two sisters and one brother.

In the 1860's there was a thriving business in the Hamlet of Corbett owned and operated by "JR" MCPHERSON, who manufactured buggies, wagons, cutters and sleighs in his brick shop and also ran a paint shop. JR McPherson also included in his business and extensive repair business on all kinds of horse drawn vehicles, both re-wooding and repainting them. This business was essential to the early settlers. Mr. McPherson's shop was a busy place and for a number of years Mr. James Lean was employed in the shop, also CRAWFORD and SANDY MCPHERSON ----- sons of JR MCPHERSON.

McPherson's shop was used as a meeting place for the early settlers to gather in the evenings to gossip and tell stories. One of JR's favorite stories was about the times Charles Watson, James Nelson Sr., Ned Ryan, ED MCPHERSON, JAMES MCPHERSON James Gardiner and other old hunting cronies used to make hunting trips. They took old dobbin and a light wagon to Lake Smith and styed at the club house for a few days (in Bosanquet Township). They also liked to talk of their fishing trips back to the River.

JR's shop at election time was the favourite meeting spot for the Conservative Party Committee for Huron and Middlesex ridings. The Whitesides, great supporters of the "Grits" at election time used to say, " There was a light late at JR's shop last night, the Tories were there aplanning!"

When JR saw that the Gasoline Age had come to stay, he wrecked his shop at Corbett and moved to a larger center where he could have a larger territory to serve and so established his business in Parkhill. Later his son CRAWFORD MCPHERSON ran the business.

Next door to the east (in Corbett) SANDY MCPHERSON owned a large blacksmith shop. This shop was a two storey building. In the bottom storey was the blacksmith shop and a wood work shop. Here SANDY did a lot of work for JR, such as ironing off wagons and sleighs. He found plenty of work from the early settlers, repairing horse drawn vehicles and keeping logging equipment intact.

In McPherson's time there was not so much horseshoeing as oxen were very popular in his day and they were used extensively for clearing and breaking the farms and logging in the bush. In 1880 SANDY MCPHERSON sold his shop to W.J. Pollock.

Parkhill Gazette 1927 James Rufus McPherson died at his home in Parkhill aged 76. He was born in Guysborough, Nova Scotia and came to Ontario when a young man. He located in Wingham at that time and learned the trade of Carriage Maker. Later he secured employment in the United States for a time, before going to Corbett where he spent almost 40 years. He spent several of these years as a carriage maker and was afterwards president of the Corbett Creamery Company. Ten years ago he moved to Parkhill and since that time he has won respect and esteem, just as he won them all in his long stay in Corbett. He was the last living member of a large family, having one brother and several sisters. {The above account errs in his birthplace and only two sisters are recorded.}

He married ANNIE (NANCY?) DUNN Bef. 1871 in McGillivary Township, Ontario. She died November 05, 1908 in Dauphin, Manitoba.

ALEXANDER (SANDY)IRA JAMES"AJ" MCPHERSON: Moved to Birtle, Manitoba in 1881. Conducted a hotel there for several years. He was a blacksmith by trade. He was a foreman on road construction into Dauphin District. (Greenway Gov't). He opened a hardware store on Burrows Avenue, Dauphin, Manitoba which he operated for many years.

The letter below was written in 1897. Settlers were asked to write letters giving their opinion of the farm land and potential for the Dauphin Valley area. These letters were used to encourage more settlers to come to the area. This letter copied from the History of the Rural Municipality of Dauphin pages 11 & 12

Dauphin, Manitoba, February 1897
I was born in the Antigomsh County, Nova Scotia and when a small boy moved with my parents to McGillivray Township, Middlesex County, Ontario. I came west in 1881 and settled in Birtle, Manitoba where I started a blacksmith shop. Nine years ago I left Birtle and came up here. It was the time of the oil well excitement and I ran an engine there at the works for two years. Then I started a sawmill in the mountains near there and after running it a year sold out. Previous to that I homesteaded a quarter section on 13-24-20, and now my family lives there at the foot of the Riding Mountain, several miles out from Dauphin I have bought a quarter adjoining my homestead and one of my sons has a quarter near by. Speaking of the Dauphin district, it is the best portion of Manitoba. We have the best land I have ever seen anywhere, the best water and the best timber in the province. A man can live here easier than in any other part. I know a number of men who have come here poor and are pretty well fixed now. I have visited the country north of the terminus of our new road at Sifton and find it a good country well fixed. I have visited the country for mixed farming and find it a splendid stock country. Yours, A.J.McPherson

Dauphin Herald - Thursday, December 21, 1911 - LOST IN THE WOODS - "Sandy" McPherson, One of Dauphin's Old-timers Lost in Riding Mountains Four Days.

Word was received in town on Friday last that A.J.McPherson, who has been hunting deer in the Riding Mountains since the first of the month, bad not been heard of since the previous Wednesday and was lost in the woods. On the previous day other members of his party had followed his trail until darkness overtook them; when they returned to camp. As he did not turn up the following day, search parties were formed, accompanied by dogs who proceeded to the mountains, about twenty miles from town, to hunt for him, as it was feared that either an accident had overtaken him, or he was lost in the woods. Fortunately, however, just as the search party had reached the camp, which they were making their starting point, and from which point McPherson had left on wednesday morning the lost man appeared, much to the relief of everyone concerned, and especially to "Sandy".

And it was a strange adventure he had to tell. It appears that on Wednesday he succeeded in shooting a moose, or a deer and was in pursuit of more venison when night overtook him and being unable to reach the camp, remained in the bush. With the solitary match he had in his possession, he managed to make a fire and when daylight appeared he was unable to find his way back, as there was no sun to guide his wondering footsteps and he was without a compass. Having no food and only a limited supply of cartridges he managed to keep himself alive by shooting a partridge each day and when he reached the camp on Saturday, he had with the partridge which he had shot that day with his last cartridge. Owing to the fact that he was without matches, he was afraid to leave the fire, which he always managed to keep within reach until he conceived the idea of making a torch, when he was thereby enabled to change his quarters, whether it brought him nearer home or not. Fortunately, the sun broke forth on Saturday morning and continued to shine all day, which enabled "Sandy" to find his way, and to reach the camp as above described. Much excitement reigned in town all Friday and Saturday, as everybody feared that he would never be found alive; although the party who were hunting for him were determined to remain on the search until he was found.

Pioneers of R.M. of Dauphin-page 161: A.J.was an founding member of the Dauphin Pioneers Association -was elected Honorary President at the first meeting and banquet on March 3, 1916. Membership was made up of pioneers who arrived in Dauphin area before the railroad arrived in November 6, 1896.

Obituary: Dauphin Herald: ALEX McPHERSON LAID TO REST AT DAUPHIN, March 8, 1923.
Had lived in Manitoba 35 years and was popularly known.

The funeral of the late Alexander J. McPherson, of Dauphin, who passed away on March 5, after a lingering illness took place today. The service, which was a very impressive one, was held in the Presbyterian Church under charge of the Brethren of Vermillion Lodge A.F.and A.M. of which deceased was a life member. Rev.Mr.Duncan officiated. Deceased was born in Nova Scotia in Jan. 1849 and was in his 74th year. The family moved afterward to Parkhill, Western Ontario. where he grew to manhood. About 35 years ago, shortly after he had married, he came and settled at Birtle where he conducted a hotel for several years. In the early years of the nineties, he visited Dauphin and the country so favorable appealed to him that a short time later he entered for a homestead at the foot of Riding Mountain, adjacent to the territory where the present town of Dauphin now stands, but "Sandy" as everybody called him, was a man of varied parts, and the acreage of a quarter section was too small to confine his energies. When news of the reported strike of oil in the Riding Mountain got spread abroad, and having comenenced. "Sandy" was right on the job. The oil boom petered out. When the Greenway Gov't decided to build a road into the district under the supervision of Theo. A. Burrows. Mr. McPherson was one of the foremen on the work. He resided at the old town for awhile, and followed his trade as a blacksmith. When the site of the present town was located and surveyed, "Sandy" opened a hardware store on Burrows Avenue, which he carried on for several years. For a number of years, he was fish Inspector at Wimupegosis. After he resigned this position, he returned to his farm, where he has lived ever since, more or less retired. In politics, he was a staunch Liberal, and in the early days of the district, was always in the thick of the fight. He never associated himself to any great extent with municipal affairs, although, after the incorporation of the town, he served part of a term as Mayor. He was a storehouse of local history, and had the faculty in a manner all his own of relating incidents of the early days in a fascinating way. He was the type of pioneer that is fast passing away.

He is survived by four daughters and three sons. Mrs. McPherson predeceased her husband some twelve years ago. The daughters are: Mrs. C. Felker, Mrs.W.A.Brinkman and Mrs. H.M.Park of Dauphin, and Mrs. James Willis of Prince Albert. The sons are: Rufus, Swan River; Fred, Dauphin and William of Minneapolis.

The funeral services will be taken charge of by the brethren of Verrmllion Lodge,A.F. & A.M., of which Mr. McPherson was a life member. Service will be held in the Presbyterian Church today (Thursday) at 2:30pm.

Obituary: June 16, 1897 - Dauphin Pioneer Press
McPHERSON: It is our sad duty this week to record the death of one of Dauphin's most popular young men. On Saturday of last week "Jim" McPherson, as he was popularly called, was apparently as strong and as well as anyone, but on Monday afternoon he was suddenly taken ill with peritonitis and in spite of all that medical skill could do, continued to grow worse until Saturday evening when death put an end to his suffering. He was in his 27th year and was one of the oldest and best known residents of the district, having come here with his father, A.J.McPherson, 9 year ago. For some time past he has had charge of his father's blacksmith shop here. Of a jovial and genial disposition, he was well liked by everyone. In the house he was a kind and dutiful son and a loving brother, and the family have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole conimunity. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon under the direction of the Oddfellows Lodge of which body he was an honored member.

We received a copy of the Dauphin Herald Press , of Manitoba which gives an account of the death of Mr. J. McPherson's elsdest son. He was known when here as "Jim" and was only a small boy then, but had grown to be a large strong man, and had charge of his father's blacksmith shop in Dauphin. PARKHILL GAZETTE

Obituary in Winnipeg Free Press-June 1999. CHRISTOPHER (KIP) PARK

It is with profound sorrow the family conveys the passing of Kip, a loving husband, son, brother and friend. On Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg,Kip passed away at the age of 59 years. He was first and foremost a writer and communicator. Through his work, Kip touched the lives of many. He was also a talented film producer (winning several international awards), photographer (his pictures appeared on the covers of Canadian and American magazines), potter (his ceramics grace the homes of friends and family), and artist (his paintings and line drawings are treasured by all who own them). Although he traveled and worked in Ottawa, London and Kerkyra, Kip always came home to Winnipeg. He loved this city and loved to write abut it. He was especially proud of his historical publications, but also enjoyed boasting about Winnipeg in American and Eastern Canadian magazines, often illustrating the stories with his own pictures. His extensive photographic collection of significant historical buildings in Winnipeg has been donated to the Archives in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library at the University of Manitoba.

To family and friends, it is Kip's charm, wit and generosity that will be forever cherished and missed. He leaves to mourn, his loving wife of 27 years, Sylvia, his mother Eleanor (Kips father Halsey predeceased him in 1962); his brother Michael and his wife Caroline and their children; Ethan and Em; and special friends, Wayne Elliott, Brian Nemes, Jules Legal and Lionel McConnick. There are also a host of extended family and friends who also loved him and miss him.

In keeping with Kips wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave. ,Winnipeg, at 2:00pm, Thursday, June 24. (Entrance on Aubrey Street).

Married in Anglican Church - Joseph in RCMP Red Serge. Per Louise Holdstock July 1999. Marjory suffered a fall in her apartment on New Year's Day 1997. Fortunately it happened between the afternoon and suppertime visits by her homecare attendants, so she was not lying on her living room floor for a very long period of time. She had fractured her pelvis, which required being kept in traction for two weeks, to be followed by several weeks of rehabilitation. Marjory was making slow, but steady progress along the road to recovery, when whe had another fall in March 1997. This mishap required surgery to implant a "nail" in her hip bone to provide support and stability. She came through the surgery well but remained in hospital the rest of her life.

(excerpts from a letter from Rhoda Bellamy/Royds to Louise Holdstock, March 24, 1997).

Marjory was a Registered Nurse and in the first class of graduates from Dauphin Hospital. Before returning to Winnipeg in 1976, Marjory and her family lived in the Ontario communities of Eagle River, Ear Falls and Keewatin. Marjory is survived by her children, Gordon and Rhoda, five granddaughters and four great-grandchildren; as well as her sister, Louise Holdstock of Victoria.
