Finding a Beagle

Unlike a toy breed, there are two sources of reputably bred Beagles, field or show breeders. I have heard it said that Beagles bred for field work/trials only resemble those that are bred strictly for show (so there is definitely a big difference between the two). In any case, the breeder should show that he or she competes in their area. It is very hard to breed an animal for a specific purpose without competing against others, so run if someone does not. Breeding an animal just because you have a male and female is irresponsible, as well as breeding strictly to produce pets. The AKC estimates that an average breeder loses $1200 per litter... if someone is making money they are probably cutting corners. This does not mean that someone is unethical to charge for a puppy, it just means that you should breed to improve animals. Pet quality animals will usually run around $200-$400 and show quality animals (those that more closely match AKC standard) run about $400 and up. The price will depend on your location, the breeder, and the individual dog. NEVER buy from a pet store... they are the most likely place that a puppy mill owner will dispose of his puppies, other then paper adds.

The puppies parents should show evidence that they are worth being bred (indicated by at least one usually having a championship or field title... not just grandparents or great greats). Visit the breeder's facilities and ask to see the dam and sire if possible. I advise anybody to stay away from parents that are shy or aggressive, as puppies tend to resemble parents. Look at the puppy to see how well he or she moves (click AKC symbol), poor structure will hamper the dog as he gets older. READ READ READ, any book on beagles you can find to help you make a knowledgeable choice. Make sure the breeder is willing to give you AKC papers and Pedigrees without charging extra.

And finally, if you just want a pet, older animals make wonderful pets. A lot of beagles wind up in pounds or breed rescue organizations through no fault of their own. Lots of people buy from puppy mills or back yard breeders to rescue an animal but are in reality supporting what they want to prevent... irresponsible breeding.
