Here's the original Freedom is Not Free poem by Kelly Strong, 1981.

Dear Dad,

I watched the flag pass by one day, it fluttered in the breeze
you stood and saluted it, and then you stood at ease
I looked at you, so tall, so proud--You would stand out in any crowd
I thought there are not many men like you, who would make my wishes come true
No, Freedom is not free
I heard the sound of taps one night, when everything was still
I listened to the bugler play, and felt a sudden chill
I wondered just how many times, that taps had meant "Amen"
when the flag had draped your coffin, MY FATHER, MY BEST FRIEND
No, freedom is not free
I thought of us, so happy, so sad--how our lives are interrupted now
like wind blown sand, One father, One son forever holding hands
No, freedom is not free

In memory of George W. Schweers: He served his country and family with honor.
