Family Stories

Along The Dry Fork Road

Strange men with picks and shovels moved into the Dry Fork community around 1905 and began to dig for gold on land leased to them by James "Jim" Wesley Hearp, a local farmer and blacksmith. He also made tombstones and his handiwork can still be seen in many of the cemeteries in the neighborhood. One of the gold mines was located near Dixon Creek. For more than sixty years one could see mounds of earth that had been excavated by the miners as they searched for gold. The mines were abandoned , the holes were left open, but little by little they were filled with debris. There was a small amount of gold gleaned from the mine but not enough to sustain a long time profitable business. My cousin informed me that those mines were later mined for mica. The demand for mica became less and less so the mines were closed. This story came from a book called Along The Dry Fork Road by S. Dail Yeatts.

The Devil's Fuss Box

When I was a child my grandmother visited our home often. My grandma would always sit in a straight back wooden chair that was painstakingly placed in a very strategic location. The location was in front of our television set. My grandma beleived that the T.V. was the "Devil's Fuss Box". Grandma kept us occupied with talk about future fishing trips and summer stays at her house. She always sat in that chair until bedtime, hers was about eight o'clock. Everyone was happy at bedtime. The next day when grandma would rise , always at dawn, no one was happy because we knew her visit would end. Many happy summers were spent with my grandma, fishing, quilting and baking.

My DAD

Everyone called my Dad "Tom" even his Mother. My Dad was a Veteran of WW2.He would never tell me stories of the war if they involved killing another human being. The stories my Dad told about the war were almost always humorous with slight inuendoes about the horror of war. One particular story I remember is about a young Phillapino boy his outfit adopted. Dad said the boy was about 8 years old. The outfit gave the boy food and clothes and played with him. Yet the boy would steal from them. Dad said the boy stole because he had been abandoned by his family and had gone hungry for so long. The boy continued to steal from my Dads outfit until they moved out of the area. Before moving out Dads company found the boy a place to live. I have pictures of the boy my Dad took.I also have pictures of members of his outfit. I hope to add a picture galery to my page in the near future,so all who read can see the faces that go with the stories.
