The Cockrell family was established in America by John Cockrell who was born
in Wales c1717. He came to America & settled in MD. John had two known sons:
Moses Cockrell who settled in SC & Simon Cockrell who lived in VA, KY & MO. MOSES COCKRELL Moses Cockrell went from MD to Fairfield Co, SC where he died c1802. The
name of his wife is not known. He had 9 sons & 3 daughters. The names of
the sons are known but: 1. John Cockrell - Lived in Louisville, KY 2. Jeremiah Cockrell - went to AR 3. Benjamin Cockrell - went to VA 4. Thomas Cockrell - died young 5. David Cockrell - went to Memphis, TN 6. Dr. Peter Cockrell - went to IN 7. James Cockrell - went to AL 8. Simon Cockrell - went to MS 9. Wm Cockrell 1802-1862 md Sally A. Spratt 1805-1888. Wm & his

& was a rancher 10. Elizabeth Cockrell died before 1821 - She was the first wife
of Wm Miller 1773NC-1840. When Wm Miller & Elizabeth came
to KY early in the 1800 they brought with them an adopted son
John Cockrell 1801-1897 who used the name "John Miller". SIMON COCKRELL Simon Cockrell 1742MD-1835MO md Magdalene Vardiman c1750VA-1835MO, d/o
John Vardiman. Simon lived in Russell Co, VA until 1802 when he came
to KY & settled in what is now Breathitt County, KY. He settled at
what is now called "The Si Bend" on the N. Fork of the Ky River. In
about 1807 Simon & some of his children went to Jackson, CO. MO &
settled near Independence. Simon's children were:
1. John Cockrell 1770VA-1828 MO md Amelia Alley About 1819 John & his family moved to what is now a part of
Breathitt County & settled at The War Shoals, on the
N. Fork of the KY River, near the Sy Bend. John was
