HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA
John Hunt made his way through the foothills of the Smoky Mountains searching for a big spring of clear fresh water he'd heard about through Indian tales. He built his home near the spring in 1805. Other settlers soon followed him and in 1810, the town that had sprung up became known as Twickingham after the English home of the poet Alexander Pope. Anti-British sentiment was so high in 1811 that the name was changed to honor the first settler. It became known as Huntsville
Big Spring Park Huntsville is a medium sized city with a population approximating 170,000. It's located in north Alabama among the foothills of the Smoky's. Huntsville is known as the "Rocket City". Werner Von Braun, and 117 other German rocket scientists, were moved here in 1950 to take up residency at Redstone Arsenal. Huntsville was no longer a small town. It grew and flourished as the era of technology got its start, in a sleepy little mill town of 16,000.
Regions Bank Building ~ Only original building still on the square The team of rocket scientists, led by Von Braun, developed the first American rocket in Huntsville. This is the same rocket, the Redstone, that successfully launched Alan Shepard into a 15 minute orbit of the earth, 3 years later in 1962. Huntsville is home to the George C. Marshall Space and Flight Center, Space Camp and the US Army's Missile Command.

Huntsville, Alabama, in fact all of North Alabama, has so much to offer. It has the South's highest annual median income at $29,400 and has been listed as one of the top 15 medium sized cities in the United States to live in. Grissom High School has been rated in the top ten high schools in the nation. After all, the schools in Huntsville certainly are educating future rocket scientists.

The many lakes in the area have made this a fisherman's paradise. Our bass are big and plentiful. The state parks in north Alabama are well suited to camping and hiking. There are mountains, canyons, and even waterfalls to happen upon. Many of the area towns pre date the Civil War.
An old church just off the square Huntsville has much to offer everyone. There is history, technology, nature and some of the best people in the world. Come on down and visit us!
