Levi Phillips

Hello, I am Levi Phillips. I was born on Sunday, 3 Nov. 1805 somewhere in Pennsylvania. My parents were also born there. Since it was so long ago, I have forgotten where. I have even forgotten my parents names! However, my gg-grandson has been able to contact me through the use of some golden elixir. (He seems to be contacting me more frequently lately.) Through him I hope to regain my memory and tell the story of my life and times. Should it remind you of anything in your past, perhaps you could help me tell my story?

LEVI'S STORY

1832

The earliest I can recall, at present, is the birth of my, and of course, Hanna Matilda's son, William. He was born in Pensylvania sometime after my marriage to Hannah which must have been after the census people called in 1830 since I do not appear as the head of a family.

Through the liberal use of the Golden Elixir, my memory has partially returned !! I now remember that my wife's maiden name was Hallowell. In fact, I can now recall some 7 generations of Hallowells. Further, I recall that my father's name was Nathan. He married Phoebe Coffin in the Abington Presbyterian Church in Montgomery County, PA. on 2 May, 1799. Oh yes, poor William. William, at the age of thirty, joined the 32nd Regiment of the O.V.I. He fell sick at Millikens Bend , Louisiana and died at Vicksburg, Missippi on 5 October, 1863. He now lies in Vicksburg National Cemetery, grave number 7618.

1834

Ah yes, another happy year! Harriet H., our second child was born this year. Harriett was also born in Pennsylvania.

1839

Well, here we are in Ohio. Our second son Samuel H. Phillips was born here this year. The land and opportunities seem just right here. We are thinking about obtaining some land and will probably raise our children here.

1840

The US Census man came by the house. The first one since Hannah and I were married. He sure asked a lot of questions! We were finally entered as follows; Sixth Census of the United States, Columbiana County, Smith Township, State of Ohio. Males, (1)

1841

This year our fourth child, Martha Jane, was born here in Ohio.

1842

They tell me that the Columbiana County, Smith Township has me down for "Delinquent Land and Town Taxes". They also listed me as "unknown".

1844

Mary C., our fifth child, was born this year.

Well, those tax people are at it again! This time the have me down for delinquent taxes but now I'm listed as "Not Taxable"!

1845

Well, I guess those tax people have finally caught up with me. I am listed as owning 42 acres of land in Range 5, Township 18, Section 7. They claim it is worth $124. Not only that, they say my Personal Property of one horse and one cow is worth $88. Seems a bit high to me! But the good news, Hannah M. was born this year!

1846

Well, last night I went to bed in Smith Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. This morning I woke up in Smith Township, Mahoning County, Ohio. They have gone and created a new County and changed the County Line!

Tuesday, 12 Jan 1847

Today I bought 40 acres of land in Berlin Township from James and Betsy Carter for $500. The Carters live in Portage County. A detailed description of the land was recorded in Vol. 1, page 432 of the Mahoning County Deed Records.

Monday, 25 Oct 1847

Today, Hannah and I sold our city lot (#8), on North Street in North Benton in Berlin Township, to Umphrey Mowen. We received $225. A description of the sale was recorded in Volume 2, page 203 of The Mahoning County Deed Records.

Oh yes, Joseph H., another son was born this year.

Wednesday, 13 Dec 1848

Today we became a family of four boys and four girls. John Halowell Phillips was born.

Wednesday, 17 June 1850

Today Hannah and I sold the 40 acres of land we bought from James and Betsy Carter back on 12 Jan 1847. Lewis Burdg bought it from us for $650 so we made $150 in about three and one-half years.

Wednesday, 14 August 1850

Today we bought 14 acres of land in Section 18, Township 17, Range 4. That is in Goshen Township, part of the East half of the Southeast quarter. We paid $375.

Tuesday, 17 September 1850

Josiah M. Caskey, Ass't Marshal, the local US Census taker, came by today. We are listed as Free Inhabitants in Smith Township in the County of Mahoning. Hannah, I, William, my shoemaker son, Harriet, Samuel, Martha Jane, Mary C., Hannah H., Joseph H., and John H., are all listed now. I am told you can see this listing for yourself on page 294B.

This has been a busy year!

Friday, 15 June 1855

Francis Emery "Frank" our ninth child was born today. My gg-grandson tells me that "Frank" is his g-grandfather.

Friday, 20 February 1857

Today the first of our children to marry, Harriet, was married to George W. Bates. George is 25 and was also born in Pennsylvania. At present, he resides in Iowa. I think they intend to settle down in Goshen Township here in Mahoning County.

Sunday, 2 August 1857

Yesterday, I gave my consent for our Martha Jane to marry. Since she is only seventeen years old, my consent was required. Today both our William and Martha Jane were married. William married Mary Louisa Yager. Mary Louisa was born in 1837 in Baden, Germany. Peter J. Schuster, of Goshen, had made application for their marriage license back on 21 July. Martha married Thomas J. Wattson, age thirty. The marriage ceremony was performed by John Schaeffer, Evangelist.

1857

Well, this has been a busy year. Three of our children have married and gone off to live lives of their own. But, Amanda "Anna" E. was also born to Harriet and I this year. So, we still have eight "children" here in the "nest".

Sunday 13 June 1858

We have decided to move to Philadelphia. Today I sold one acre of the 14 acre tract of land that we bought from Henry Mall on 14 August, 1850. It was sold to my son-in-law George W. Bates and my daughter Harriett. They have been married for about one and onehalf years now.

1858

Well, We are now grandparents. Harriet had a daughter, Lydia A. Bates, and William had a son, George W. Phillips, who was born in Pennsylvania.

Thursday 12 June 1860

Well, here we are in Pennsylvania again. It's another US Census day for us! We are listed in the 2nd Div., 23 Ward, County of Philadelphia, Post Office of Rising Sun. Listed with Matilda (Hannah) and I are the children who came with us from Ohio. John; James (Francis); Amanda; and Samuel. Samuel married Rebecca, who is 18, "within the year".
