AM. CH. ORLANE'S SMOOTH SAILING

ARRIVES AT SOSUEMEI

OCTOBER, 1999

Am.Ch. Orlane's Smooth Sailing is bred and owned by Linda Kendall Smith. He finished his American Championship fast with handler Pat Martello. We were so ecstatic to have been given the opportunity to handle and live with one of the Orlane dogs.

When we first saw him sitting in his cage it brought back memories of our BISS Ch. Sosuemei Bold' N Bratty. Same colour and expression on the face. "Sam" bounded out of the cage in joy and strutted around like he owned the place. We knew then that this showing adventure would be a lot of fun.

Sam fit right in place with our other Lhasas and particularly enjoyed our resident Peke - Gizmo. He loved to explore the acreage and get a chance to romp on the bed.

Each day brought us a new discovery of this guys personality. From his grumbling when he didn't want to do something to his "get you all wet" baths to his wonderful soft kisses. We knew that this was definitely going to be a year to remember..

Sam's debut to the Canadian Show Circuit was done in style.

He earned BEST OF BREED from the classes and went on to earn GROUP 4.

Judge: Heather Logan

She commented to us that if he could have seen and moved out more then she would have placed him higher in the group. She gave us some suggestions of how to keep his head coat from falling in his face.

SAM SPENDS HIS FIRST CHRISTMAS AT SOSUEMEI

Of course it snowed this Christmas, so we were kept busy taking off the snowballs that he came in with. He loved wandering under the Christmas tree and sniffing at all the presents.

A New Year and more discoveries to be made.

Sam finished his Canadian Championship with a GROUP 3.

Now it was time to get him into Specials material. We concentrated on growing his coat and finding out what made him tick in the show ring. We put him on CT Support and noticed such a change in him - full of so much more energy and his coat was very healthy. Overall he was a much happier dog. He was now starting to enjoy showing - the main ingedient of any good show dog.

	Sam's winning streak continued. He not only placed several more times in the group, but won a BEST OF BREED at a U.S. show. This was the first time that Wayne had handled Sam in a U.S show. The judge commented on his coat texture and condition. She also thought he was a wonderful specimen of the breed.
CASCADE LHASA APSO SPECIALTY AUGUST Judge: Ludell Beckwith Tara handled Sam and won BEST OF OPPOSITE over some very tough competition. Both her and Sam celebrated all the way home. They even shared a butterscotch sundae - face coat and all.
	Sam was now really enjoying the show scene. He was even now staying in the bathtub. He would wait until the water was turned off and put his paw on the edge and give Lori a kiss before getting out . Once out , he would run around getting everyone wet - this had become a favourite game of his. When drying on the table, he would not move until the dryer went off and then it was almost impossible to put his elastics in his head coat. He knew that this was now playtime.
Sam and Wayne were now a team. Inside the ring Sam was a real showman but outside the ring he was a clown. He loved to visit with everyone and every dog at the shows.
	Fall of 99 Kamloops and another Group placement. Judge: Marion Postgate Marion commented that Sam will be continuing on winning. He was in great condition and loved the show ring.
Okay where's the liver? He loved to have his liver done in lots of garlic. Wayne never baited him, just gave it to him after he had been good. It was fun watching the two of them play in the ring when the judge was not watching.
	The head coat was a challenge to keep out of his eyes. He could not stand it if he could not see everything that was going on. We also wanted everyone to see what a beautiful expression that he has.
Wayne and Sam working in the group. Wayne had gotten Sam trained so that he would not move out of a stack until it was time. Sam adored being in the group and continued placing.

Another New Adventure for Sam for the Millenium. His entries had been received for the Westminster Show. This was quite an honour for both Sam and us that he was the choosen Orlane dog to go.

Time for our goodbyes.

It certainly was a year to remember. We wish to thank both Linda & Dorothy for have giving us this opportunity to show and live with Sam and to also have his progeny. He will always have a very special place in our hearts.
