Coming When Called
Your dog will probably pass the test if he:
Comes directly to the handler when called
Also keep in mind that:
You may repeat the command more than once
You may give reasonable hand signals in conjunction with the verbal command
Your dog is not required to sit in front of you nor is he required to do an obedience "finish" like as in an obedience trial
Your dog will need additional training in this area before he can pass this test if he:
Refuses come when called
Runs to the evaluator instead of the handler when called by the handler
Attempts to leave the testing area instead of going to the handler
Takes an unreasonable amount of time getting to the handler ( ie because of too much interest in his surroundings)
Common errors made by the handler, causing the team to fail this exercise:
Giving harsh, overly loud verbal commands or yelling at the dog
Snatching / jerking on the leash to get the dog into motion
"Reeling" the dog in with the line
So what exactly does this test look like? If you are taking this test under me, you can expect something like the following:
I will have a long line on the ground and I will ask you to attach the line to your dog's collar and remove your leash
I will then tell you to leave your dog in the position of your choice and go 10 feet away for the recall exercise.
I will then instruct you to call your dog to you
I will signal the end of the exercise by saying "exercise finished"
