I am a jewish dancer and timbrel player. I thought I would share what I know about the timbrel & jewish dance, references about them in the bible, and the role they have in the church today. If you are interested in learning the Timbrel and would like to learn from the ministry that first brought it to the USA there is a link to Shachah Ministries International below.

The Role of Dance in the Church
Jewish Dance and Timbrel have two roles in the church: praise and warfare. Two examples of prasie are in Psalm 149:3 and 150:4 where it talks about praising him with the dance and tamborines.
My Favorite example of warfare is in Isaiah 30:32,"Every stoke the lord lays on them with his punishing rod will be to the music of tambourines and harps, as He fights them in battle with the blows of his arm." (NIV).
Another referance to warfareis in 2 Cronicles 20 it talkes about Jehoshaphat going to battle against the people of Moab & Ammon. The lord tells them they will not need to fight in this battle but to stand still and se the salvation of the Lord, who is with them. When they went to the place they were to have the battle and started to sing and praise the Lord...he sent ambushes into the enemy's camp and they all killed each other. Not one israelite had to lift their sword, just their voice to the lord.
In verse 22 it says, "Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah: they were defeated." the "praise" was probably dancing and playing of instruments, including the timbrel, since it had already mentioned singing. It just goes to show that the battle always belongs to the Lord and all we have to do is give it to him and praise his name.
