The old family properties of Almagill, Netherwood and Orchardknowes have now moved into other hands and it has long been felt that there should be some site which could form a 'focus' for these family visits.
The McBrairs had worshipped at St Michaels church since pre-Reformation times and had their own aisle, chapel and vault in the old church building. These were swept away during the Reformation, though the family retained a private aisle until the 19th century.
The present church is built on the site of at least one older building and during refurbishment work in the late 19th century the floor was raised, exposing traces of the old "Romish" kirk and also some of the burial sites therein. These were removed and the remains were re-interred in an unmarked plot against the rear wall dividing the old and new parts of the cemetery, near the site of Robert Burns' memorial.
(Records from the time of this reburial are vague as to the exact site but it is likely to have been very near the foreground of this picture).
The above photograph shows the site, on the low dividing wall at the
lefthand side of the picture, of the new memorial plaque to the members
of the McBrair family who worshipped in the nearby church and who, for
many generations, were interred in this churchyard.
